Edward E. Watts Dies, Musician.
Edward E. Watts, 95, of 58-1/2 North Buckey street, Crooksville, a
retired employee of Hull Pottery Company, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday
at his home after a long illness. He was a pioneer resident of
Crooksville and was well known in musical circles. He was born July
20, 1876, in Crooksville, a son of George W. and Susan Triplett
Watts. His wife, the former Lou E. Baker, died in 1945. At an early
age he became interested in music. Self instructed, at the age of
16 he was a member of the "Bauer Band" of Zanesville. He was later
a member and director of the Sevent Regiment band of the Ohio
National Guard. He also played first chair soloist cornet with
Amrou Grotto Band and held the same position with the Armco Band
which he later conducted. Also a retired member of Zanesville
Memorial Band, he wrote and arranged music. His bast known
composition was the March Wattsonian, many times included on the
local concert programs and played by bands throughout the country
including the United States Army Band. He was also a member of the
old Weller Theather orchestra. In 1910 he moved to Everett, Wash,
and taught and played proffesionally in theaters in Washington and
Oregon. He studied trumpet and cornet at Legores Conservatory of
Music in Seattle under the direction of Albert Cleveland and Richard
Strauss, internationally known artists of the day.
Returning to Crooksville, he organized a band and taught band and
music at Crooksville, Roseville, and McLuney high schools. Mr.
Watts organized the first Sunday School orchestra and directed the
choir and orchestra in the First Methodist Church of Crooksville.
He arranged many musical programs for the American Legion ad other
civic groups in Crooksville. Mr. Watts was employed at Hull Pottery
until retiring at the age of 90. He was a member of the First United
Methodist Church, National Brotherhood of Operative Potters and the
American Federation of Musicians Local 54, Zanesville. Surviving
are a son, Ned Watts, clerk of courts in Perry County; and a
daughter, Mrs. Fred (Gertrude) Cannon, both of Crooksville; a
brother, A. E. (Gene) Watts of North Canton; seven grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren. Three sisters and a brother are
deceased. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United
Methodist Church in Crooksville with Rev. Earse Mauler officiating.
Burial will be in Crooksville Cemetery. Friends may call at Fred L.
Cannon and Sons Funeral Home in Crooksville after 7 p.m. today.
