POLICE HAVE CLUE IN BRUTAL KILLING
James Omen Slain While Listening to Ball Game at Place on W Main.
"Let's bump the old man off with a billiard cue and take his money
for a trim to Florida" Police were looking today for a recent Lash
high school graduate who was quoted in that manner as suggesting the
murder of James Omen, 66, proprieter of Plec's place, a poolroom at
826 West Main street. Omen was found burally slain yesterday
afternoon in the poolroom, where he had been listening to a broadcast
of the World Series baseball game. A cue stick and a slab of wood
had been used to bash in the man's skull. His throat had also been
pierced with a chisl and his neck was slit with a knife. Detective
Captain Robert Snelling, who took the lead in rounding up a score of
persons for questioning, said a search was under way for the youthful
suspect who had proposed not once, but several times, to kill Omen.
A frequent companion of the suspect told the store today of how he had
been aksed, more than once, to help kill Omen for his money. It was
considered more than a coincidence that the brutal slaying took place in
much the same manner that the youth was said to have outlined. Omen's
billfold containing about $100 in cash was missing. The many youths
who frequented the poolroom knew that Omen always carried between
$100 and $200. He often opened his billfold to load a couple of
dollards to a hardpressed boy of his acquaintance. The killer
moreover appeared to know of the locked compartment beneath a counter,
in which Omen kept additional cash. A key chain attached to the man's
belt had been broken but the slayer was foiled in gaining access to
the cash drawer when the key roled into a floor grating. The drawer
contained $70 while $3.25 was found in Omen's watch pocket. His
wife, Vergie, was the last person known to have seen Omen before he
was slain. She visited the poolroom just before the start of the
World Series ball game. Police have not yet found anyone who has
admitted visisting the poolroom between 1 o'clock in the afternoon,
when Mrs Omen left, until 3 o'clock, when the body was found. The
murder is believed to have taken place at 1:35 when the victim's
wrist watch had stopped. The principal suspect did not visit his
house all night, although he was seen at several points in the city
late yesterday afternoon. The evidence pointing to his guilt has not
prevented police from continuing their search for other leads. They
are also taking into consideration the possibility that more than one
person may have been involved. Still held for questioning today were
three young men who were known to be frequent patrons of the poolroom.
Police were investigating the fact, which they conceded may have no
significance, that Omen was wearing a Lash high school ring of the
Class of 1948. Chief of Police C H Courtney assigned six policemen
to assist the detective bureau in an effort to clear up the murder
which was baffling from several standpoints: particularly because it
was so viciously brutal. Meanwhile today, arrangements were made to
hold funeral services for Omen at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at
Mader-Peoples funeral home with Rev Louis H Valbracht, past of St
John's Lutheran church, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn.
Omen's battered body was discovered at 3 o'clock by E A Buckley of
731 Elberon avenue.
son of William Omen and Bridget Scanlon
