Zanesville Soldier Views Atomic Tests
Sgt. Roland R. Harmon, son of Mrs. Rowena O. Harmon of 1621
Norwood boulevard, witnessed the first test-firing of an atomic
shell from the army's giant cannon at Camp Desert Rock, Nev.
He was one of nearly 3000 officers and enlisted men, most of
them artillerymen, who crouced behind revetments 4500 yards
from ground zero as scientists fired the huge 280 mm artillery
piece by electrical control from a tower ten miles away. Sgt.
Harmon is a guided misile mechanic. Since entering the army
in 1940, he has been awarded the Theater ribbon with five
campaign starts, American Defense Service ribbon, American
Theater Campaign ribbon and the Good Conduct medal with clasp.

Denton Record-Chronicle (TX) - February 29, 2008
Jerry Dale Mitchell, Sr., 61, of Krum, passed away Wednesday,
February 27, 2008 at Denton Regional Medical Center. He was born April
21, 1946 in Denton to Willis Mitchell, Sr. and Mabel Reca Boyles
Mitchell. He married Cecilia Kaye Ice on November 29, 1977 in
Gainesville. He was a HVAC Technician for the Denton I.S.D. and a
member of the Elks Lodge. Visitation will be Friday, February 29,
2008 from 6 - 8 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Directors. Funeral service
will be Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of DeBerry
Funeral Directors with Rev. Steve Plunkett officiating. Burial will
follow at Jackson Cemetery in Krum. He is survived by his wife,
Cecilia Kaye Mitchell of Krum; daughters, Angie Powell of Denton and
Mindy Reynolds of Hutchinson KS; sons, Michael Dale Mitchell of Denton
and Jerry Dale Mitchell, Jr. of Denton; sisters, Nina Bishop of
Alvord, Betty Jane Self of Ft. Worth and Mary Kay Copp of Denton;
brothers, Willis Mitchell, Jr. and Bob Mitchell, both of Denton; seven
grandchildren, Michael Mitchell, Blake Mitchell, Lauren Mitchell,
Paige Mitchell, Jace Powell, Preston Fuentez and Presley Kaye Fuentez.
He is preceded in the by his parents; and brothers, Billy Mitchell,
Winton Mitchell, Donald Mitchell, Kenneth Mitchell, Jack Mitchell and
Jimmy Lee Mitchell. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer
Society, P.O. Box 9652, Fort Worth, Texas 76147.
