Notes:

I have been unable to find any service listing for William, although he would have been about the right age for 1812 service. There is a roster listing of Capt. Timothy Buell's Company of men from Washington Co., Ohio who served from Aug 1 until Sep 7 1813 which includes John Laughey, William Laughey. Don't know if Laughey is a transcription error of LONGLEY or not. I haven't been able to locate any other records of LAUGHEYs in Washington Co.

His father George shows up on several different 1812 rosters, so it could be that he successfully kept his son at home while he served.

William was married twice and raised two families. He was born in 1795 most likely in Loudoun Co., Virginia. As a teenager, his family moved to Ohio and it was there that he met his first wife (name unknown as of yet). They were married about 1823 in either Jefferson or Washington counties of Ohio. Over the next 12 years, they had five children together; two boys (Benjamin and Jacob) and three girls (Sarah, Mary, and Grace).

William's first wife died about 1838 in Washington or Morgan County, while their oldest boy was 14 or so and their youngest daughter was under 2. He remarried to a young lady by the name of Sarah Sanders - William was 44 and Sarah was 26. In 1840, they had their first child Joseph and can be found living in Morgan County Ohio with their new son and four of the children from the first marriage.

By 1850, all the children from the first marriage had left the house. William (55) and Sarah (37) are still living with six children under the age of 10. William is listed as a carpenter by trade - many of his brothers are coopers and live nearby.

In 1853, William and Sarah have their last child Sarah while living in Morgan County. Sometime while she was young, all nine of them packed up and moved west to Noble Co., Indiana. William is listed as a farmer in 1860. Back in Morgan Co., a Savage Family Tree was drawn in 1861 and William was listed among the deceased. If that is true, then he died before his two oldest boys went off to war and the firstborn was killed.

The children from the first marriage are not found living anywhere near Sarah and William. Benjamin married Mary Twyman and stayed in Muskingum county until she died. He then moved to Wisconsin and remarried several times. Sarah Jane married Samuel Wells. They are found living near Samuel's family in 1850 and 1860, but removed to Palo, Iowa (in Linn County) by 1870. Jacob married Amanda Monroe and lived in Blue Rock, Ohio (Muskingum Co). I have not been able to locate what happened to young Mary. Grace married David Hooper and then married John McAtee.

The children from the second marriage seemed to stay together for a time and then left as their parents died (William sometime between 1860 and 1870, Sarah sometime between 1880 and 1900). Joseph Longley was killed in the civil war. George survived the civil war, but somehow avoided many of the battles after Joseph was killed. He married Margaret Richardson and moved to Kansas about 1880. Elizabeth married Hamilton Baker and they and they moved to Illinois about 1910. Margaret married William Reed and they left Noble county about 1869 - showing up in Illinois in 1880. Reuben signed up for the civil war in 1865 when he turned 15. He later married Mariah Hill and stayed in northeast Indiana the rest of his life. Sarah M married John Hagerty and they moved to Michigan by 1890. John was a preacher and they lived all over until finally settling in Louisiana in their old age.
