Funeral Service For F. M. Longley Held in LaGrange
LaGrange, Ga., April 19 - (Special) - The funeral of Judge F. M.
Longley, prominent and distinguished attorney, who died in LaGrange
Wednesday morning at the home of his son, Judge Frank P. Longley,
was held Thursday at the First Baptist church. Judge Longley was a
native of Tennessee, having been born in Polk county, April 4, 1839.
When 18 years of age he moved to Georgia, locating in WHitfield
county. When the civil war broke out he enlisted in Company B,
Third Tennessee regiment and served throughout the conflict. At
the close of the war he took up the study of law and was admitted
to the bar in 1866, and the folowing year moved to West Point where
he becan the practice of his chosen profession. In 1871 he moved to
LaGrange where he soon forged to the front as one of the leading
lawyers of the Coweta circuit. He was elected as the representative
of Troup county in the legislature and took an active and leading
part in the seasons of 1873-74. Governor Colquit appointed him as
the judge of the Coweta circuit to serve the unexpired term of Judge
Buchanan who was nominated to congress in 1880. At the national
convention held in Chicago in 1884 when Cleveland and Hendricks were
nominated, Judge Longley served as a delegate from the state of
Georgia. In the local affairs of LaGrange, Judge Longley always
manifested a keen interest, serving as mayor two terms. He was
active in the encouragement and aid of developing the industrial and
agricultural life of LaGrange and Troup county. In religious and
civic affairs he always took a prominent and leading part. As a
member of the First Baptist church he served for a number of years
on the board of deacons and taught a class in Sunday school. Judge
Longley was married to Miss Mary E. Poer, daughter of Rev and Mrs.
D. M. Poer, of Harris county, in 1869. She preceded him to the grave
12 years ago. The funeral was held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock in
the First Baptist church. Dr. A. B. Vaughan, a close and intimate
friend, and who for a number of years served as his pastor, conducted
the funeral, assisted by Dr. Spencer Tannell. After the funeral
exercises at the church the body was enriled to Hillview cemetery for
Interment. Judge Longley is survived by three sons, Frank P.
Longley, of LaGrange, Dr. Fuller M. Longley, of Chattanooga, Tenn;
Elden S. Longley, of Los Angeles, Cal, and one brother Houston
Longley, of Dalton.
