The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Antlanta, Georgia, December 17, 1998
Barbara S. Berry, 81, founded Atlanta stage group to pursue dream
of singing
Barbara Steenrod Berry sang at her father's opera house as a child,
then put her dreams of stardom aside. When the Sandy Springs resident
stepped on stage 60 years later, her voice wasn't as strong, but the
spotlight was just as bright. Mrs. Berry, 81, helped found an amateur
theater group for lifelong dreamers like herself. For nine years,
Triple S. Productions staged dozens of musicals in Atlanta. At least
176 people appeared on stage in holiday shows, classics such as
"Fiddler on the Roof" and original works. "I would say the average
age of the performers was probably 50," said Mrs. Berry's husband,
Milton O. Berry. "We were trying to appeal to people who had never
had the opportunity to appear on stage. That's what we were hunting
for." The funeral for Mrs. Berry, who died of renal failure Sunday
at her residence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sandy Springs Chapel
Funeral Directors. Known for her love of stylish hats, Mrs. Berry
grew up in Nelsonville, Ohio, and started singing at her father's
opera house at age 5. She married and had two children, her husband
said, but never stopped dreaming of the stage. While her friends
enjoyed going to nightclubs or restaurants, Mrs. Berry frequented
piano bars where the public had a chance to sing. "Wherever I took
her, that's the first thing we would look for and she would do it,"
her husband said. In 1983, at 66, Mrs. Berry found a way to make her
lifelong dream and that of other amateur performers finally come
true. Along with her brother, the late Spencer Steenrod, and her
husband, she founded Triple S. Productions, nicknamed Trispro. "You
could tell she loved everything she was doing," said Sandy Streicher
of Lawrenceville, who played piano for the group. "When the music
started and she started to sing, she was a completely different
person." Trispro attracted an older crowd, fond of the music of the
'40s and '50s, and attendance was much greater than expected, Mr.
Berry said. After the final show in 1992, the group had $10,000 left
over and established a scholarship for performing arts students at
Georgia State University. Survivors other than her husband include a
daughter, Lynn Williams of Tucker; a son, Greg O. Berry of Marietta;
a sister, Roberta Lynn Steenrod Adler of Nelsonville; and three
grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that
contributions be made to the Trispro Scholarship Fund, Georgia State
University, University Plaza, Atlanta, GA 30303.
