Ruben Longley
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for Ruben
Longley, 69, who died at 6:45 a.m. Thursday at his home, 1829
Sinclair Street, after a one-week illness. Surviving are a son,
Milan, with whom he lived; a brother, William, Huntertown; a
grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Friends may call at
the Mongovan & Sons Mortuary after 1 p.m. today. The Rev. Richard
Howell will conduct services there and burial will be in Lindenwood
Cemetery.
----------------------------------------------------------
As the following newspapers indicate, Reuben made a few bad choices
in his younger days. After his mistakes were paid for, he got
married and had a child. Haven't found any info about him after that.
Not sure yet, but it's possible that his "pal" John C Baker mentioned
in the articles is his cousin (He did have a cousin John Baker four
years younger than him and living in the same general area).
By 1910, Reuben had gotten out of jail, was married, had a five year
old son (Milan), and was living and working on his cousin's (John
Hill) farm.
Not sure if its him or not, but there is a Reuben F Longley about
the right age, born Indiana, living in 1930 Lansing Michigan wife
is Mary J. Haven't found any further info than that.

IN TWO ROLES
Reub Longley Poses as a Farmer and Sells Timber for Cash.
A FORT WAYNE LAD.
He is Trapped Here Today at His Boarding House
CONFESSES TO SHARP.
Kissed Goodbye by His Landlady when the Trap is Sprung.
Ever since 5 o'clock yesterday morning Supt. Gorsline has had men
shadowing the Aufrecht block on West main street. Ever since that
hour Officer Sharp and Clerk "Buck" Langard have been loafing around
the corner of Main and Harrison streets talking to the pretty farmer
girls on the market. This was not thier chief occupation, however.
They were there to arrest Reuben Longley on a warrant from Columbia
City charging him with fraud. It was known to the police that
Longley boarded at this place and that he was particularly friendly
with Mrs. Jennie Vanaurden, the landlady. She recently applied
for a divorce from her husband, Henry Vanaurden, and the officers
were informed that she intended to marry Longley as soon as she
was free. Acting on this information the Vanaurden woman was
shadowed for the purpose of pinching Longley if he called at his
former haunts. At 4 o'clock last night Officer Sharp left the
place to get a moment's rest, but at early morn he and Laugard
were on duty again. About 9 o'clock this morning the officers
caught a glimpse of Longley through one of the windows and an
hour later arrested him in his room. The officers put the
handcuffs on him and when they were leading him away Mrs.
Vanaurden rushed up to him and with tears in ber eyes kissed
him an affectionate farewell.
Later the officer went back to the place and seized about $200
worth of barber chairs and other tonsorial parlor goods which
Longley had recently purchased with a view to leaving the city
and locating at some other town in the barber business. He
confessed to Sharp that he purchased the supplies with the money
he got on his fraudulent deal near Columbia City. The story of
the alleged crime is a hot one. Near Round Lake, Columbia City,
is a farm owned by H. Cook. He is at present not a resident of
Whitley county. David Geiger, a lumber buyer for S.J. Peabody,
wanted to purchase the timber on a small portion of the farm.
John Baker, a farmer who lives near the place told Geiger that
Cook wanted to sell. Longley went to the farm and passed himself
off as Cook and sold the timber for $200 and got the cash.
Friends of Cook knew that he had not returned to sell the timber
and demanded an investigation
Longley has respectable relatives in this city and his father
conducts the feed barn on Clinton street near Superior. The
young man has been a barber and has never been looked upon as
a crook. He will be taken to Columbia City this afternooon.
Longley returned to Fort Wayne 8:45 this morning on the Pennsylvania
road, from Lima, Ohio, to which point he was prepared to move his
barber shop supplies.

LONGLEY SENTENCES
The Fort Wayne Boy Given Three Years at Columbia City
LONGLEY GETS THREE YEARS
It will be remembered that about four weeks ago Officer Sharp and
Buck Langard arrested Reuben Longley, a Fort Wayne boy, wanted for
forgory at Columbia City, at the Aufrecht Block. Longley was tried
yesterday and found guilty. He was sent to the penitentiary for
three years. Longley's parents are highly respected residents of
Ft. Wayne. John C Baker, Longley's pal, will be tried next week.
(note - don't know when he was released, but by Jun 1900 he was
living and working in Noble Co., Indiana

Other Arrests.
Last Evening Detective Coling arrested John Baker, the man
who is supposed to be mixed up with Longley in the
Columbia City crooked transactions. Baker denied his
guilt at first, but consented to go to Columbia City last
night with the officers. Yesterday afternoon Officer Sharp
recovered $43 of the money Reuben Longley secured.
He had given this money to Mrs Vanarden, his fiancee. She
denied it at first, but when she was taken to police
headquarters, she accompanied the officers to her home
and gave the roll of bills to them.
