WAR HERO FOUGHT FOR INDIAN HEALTH FUNDS

Hudson Six, a well-known Cherokee elder from Rio Linda who was a
leader in efforts to win health funding for American Indians in
urban areas, died Wednesday of an apparent heart attack. He was
75. With his wife, the late Harriet Six, he was a powerful
presence in the American Indian community, dedicated to improving
health care services for Indians in Sacramento County. Mr. Six was
a retired lumber sorter, having worked at mills in Humboldt and
Lassen counties before moving to Sacramento County in the early
1960s. A native of Eucha, Okla., he was a full-blooded Cherokee
who was raised in an orphanage. He did not speak English until he
was 8. He was a decorated World War II veteran, having earned the
Purple Heart for injuries suffered while an Army infantryman
fighting in Italy in 1944. His combat wounds were so severe that
Mr. Six spent nearly a year in Army hospitals and underwent several
surgeries before being released from active duty. He was a member
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Citrus Heights. Mr. Six's
wife died in 1995. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Ruth
Six of Rio Linda and Judy Ann Six and Susan Kay Six, both of Grass
Valley; brothers, Franklin and Grant Six; and six grandchildren.
Services are planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday in Calvary Lutheran Church,
515 L St., Rio Linda. Burial will be in Sylvan Cemetery, next to his
wife's grave. Hudson Six An Army infantryman in 1944, he earned a
Purple Heart for injuries suffered in Italy.

SIX
Funeral services for Hudson SIX, 75, were held June 2, in the Calvary
Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Sylvan Cemetery under the direction
of Nightingale-Gilmore Funeral Chapel. Mr. SIX was born July 21, 1922,
in Euche, Okla., and he died May 27, 1998. He was a full-blood
Cherokee and was raised in a Sequoyah Indian Orphanage in Oklahoma.
Mr. SIX was a W.W.11 Veteran, and awarded the Purple Heart. He was past
Commander of the Citrus Heights V.F.W. A retired lumber worker and and
a well know Indian Elder, respected by everyone and was active in all
Indian gatherings and celebrations. Mr. SIX was preceded in death by
his wife, Harriet; and a sister, Nellie SIX. Survivors include, three
daughters, Mary Ruth, Judy Ann and Susan, all of Calif.; two brothers,
Franklin and Grant; special niece, Janie; and six grandchildren.
