McALISTER, ROBERT JOHN, SR. - age 74, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, October 8, 2001, at his home. Born January 13, 1927, in McMinn County, Tenn., the son of Everett Thomas McAlister and Clara Helen Forrester McAlister. Veteran of World War II, serving with the U. S. Army. Came to Oak Ridge in 1948 from McMinn County to begin work at Y-12. Retired in 1987 from Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Y-12, where he was Department Head of the Metal Preparation Division. After retirement and up until his death, Mr. McAlister worked as a consultant for Hazelwood Enterprises. Member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served on the church building committee since the church was first built. Served as past president of the Oak Ridge Baseball Association for many years and also coached Little League for several years. Memberships included the American Legion Post #0199 and Clan McAlister of American. Received an award as Tennessee Volunteer of the Year and an award from the Pentagon for outstanding service to his country. In addition to his parents, Mr. McAlister was preceded in death by brothers, Reed McAlister and E. J. McAlister and by a sister, Ruth McAlister. Survived by wife, Mary Ellen Simmons McAlister. They celebrated their 51st Anniversary on September 15th. Sons, Robert John McAlister, Jr., and Michael Thomas McAlister, both of Oak Ridge; daughter, Belinda Ann McAlister of Houston, Texas; brothers, William McAlister and wife Berry of Etowah, Tenn., Carl Everett McAlister and wife Robbie of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Charles E. McAlister and wife Betty of Oak Ridge; one granddaughter, Tina Michelle McAlister of Lakeland, Fla., and several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Funeral services are Thursday, October 11, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Mattson and Rev. David Mayes officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers and nephews. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, 320 Robertsville Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, or to Covenant Home Care & Hospice, Patient Care, 700 S. Illinois Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 10, 2001, from 6-8 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge.
