People Who Came On the First Trains
Charles Marion Tyler, born 23 September 1829 in Danville, Kentucky, son of John and Sarah R. Reaville Tyler, and Mary Catherine Longley, born 20 December 1839 in Austin County, Texas, daughter of Campbell and Sarah Ann Henry Longley, were married 29 June 1854 in Washington County, Texas. Charles built their first home from timber found close at hand. He hewed out the weatherboards with his board and drawing knife, used white cedar for one floor and red cedar for the other; fashioned rawhide in a woven manner for the slat-backed chair seats and springs for the beds. A trundle bed rolled out from under the large bed on four small wooden wheels, hand turned. The master bed, formed of oak which grew on his land, was beautifully adorned with white fringed blue chambray foot curtains. Blue chambray curtains with lovely white linen valances gave the home a "lived in" appearance and assured the visitor a warm welcome.
