Mary J. Hairston Knowles, 96, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2005. She was born in Henry County to the late Joseph and Mary Hairston. Mrs. Knowles was an active member of First Baptist Church, Hollins, where she served as a member of the Deaconess Board and the Women's Missionary Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Golden G. Knowles; brothers and sisters, Joseph, Lula, Bob, Elizabeth, Pearl, Edd, Betty, Daisy, Ruth, Ted and Homer. Survivors includes nephews, Frank (Janie) Johnson of Roanoke and Dennis King of Denver, Colo.; nieces, Margarite Harris of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mary Faucett of Vallejo, Calif., Betty Adams of Pittsburgh, Pa., Joan (Ambrose) Lane of Sykesville, Md. and Geneva (David) Parker of Bassett, Va.; stepsister, Lutetia Dudley of Fieldale, Va.; a host of great-nieces, greatnephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005 at First Baptist Church, Hollins, with Dr. Charles Calloway officiating. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Friends may call for viewing on Friday at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.
