Guy Eugene Aubley
I was born in April, 1932, to Mr. and Mrs. Guy Aubley. I have one sister,
Barbara. I attended school at Mumford through the 34d grade. My most vivid
recollections of school days are the soft ball games with Eldred or Unity
schools. Ruby Hollar and Ellen Kautzer are the most remembered teachers.
Hot lunch programs during the early 40's comprised of prunes boiled in a
large pot on the Warm Morning stove - then having to dump the batch at the
end of the week. I remember the crock water cooler with the bubbler fountain
and the bucket to catch the 'sloppers', since there was no drain pipe.
Christmas program, with each student participating , was a highlight. After
the program, there was a reindeer with horns, bells, and Santa.
Each winter my father would make a long sled to be pulled by tractor or
truck. We would pick up friends, neighbors, and relatives and have great sleigh
rides over the snow.
4-H trips to Camp Wentz and Rock Springs were trips I remember. My parents
would always make time for us to participate in all events, and if need be,
many times furnished the transportation for large groups.
During the late 30's I had my relatives saving coupons from loaves of bread,
so we could always go to afternoon movies. The little kids always had to sit in
the first 4 rows a the show.
I was Junior Clas Pres. in high school, and I well remember the Junior-Senior
Banquet. 49ers was the theme, and much work was involved in setting the desert
scene of sand, catcus, etc.
After high school, I attended Electronic School in Nebraska and worked for
Boeing before enlisting in the Navy. I attended Submarine School in New London,
Conn. After graduating, my time was spent in Cuba, Panama Canal, San Diego, Hong
Kong, Phillipines, Hawaii, Japan, and Guam as a sonar operator aboard the Bowfin
and Raton submarines. After discharge, I attended the School of Mines, in
Colorado and Missouri, and the School of Forestry, Columbia.
Joy Campbell and I were married in 1965. We have one child, Stephanie. After
graduating from Northwestern State College, Alva, I was librarian at Sharon and
Isabel, before becoming Director of IMC and IMPC for Project Best and Special
Education. I was also librarian for 4 years at Willowdale, Zenda, and Nashville.
At present I am farming on the Aubley homestead.
Patsy Lou Janzen and I were married in 1971. Patsy was born in 1939 and adopted
by John and lizzie Janzen at 10 months of age. She was raised on a farm in Yash
Co., Neb. Patsy attended school at Benedict, Neb., Freemont Junior College and
graduated from Wichita State University with an MA degree in Lagopedics. She
taught first and second grades, Special Education, and Speech Therapy at the
Institute of Logapedics. Presently she is teaching for South Central Kansas,
Special Education. She is a member of the Mennonite Church.
In 1973 we purched the Sawyer School and are making our home in the grade
school part of the building. We are in the process of remodeling the interior of
the school. The gymnasium is in constant use by the local people for volleyball
and basketball. It is the meeting place for many other clubs and parties. The
building is heated with hot water, and we are in the process of installing
various forms of solar energy devices to aid in supplemental heat.
Our main activities, while at home, revolve around the large circular fireplace
installed in the center of the living room or 'music room.' Our outside activities
are the Christian Church, Saddle Club, Education Ass'n Council for Exceptional
Children, Pratt Ass'n for Retarded Citizens, and the C.B.er's.
