THE ADAMSVILLE REGISTER OBITUARIES 1889-1939

pg. 68 Death of Wm. Beatty
William Beatty, a former well-known farmer of the Gilbert vicinity,
died at his home in Trinway, Wednesday, January 13, 1915, of
paralysis from which he had suffered for the past three years.
Since last May he has been almost helpless. He has lived in
Trinway since last September. A widow, two brothers and one
sister survive him. His brothers and sisters are Alonzo Beatty,
of near Gilbert; C. E. Beatty, of Indianapolis; and Mrs. Jessie
Gunder of Minneapolis. Funeral services were conducted Saturday
afternoon by Rev. P. A. Bright at the Beatty M. E. Church and the
remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at that place.

HENRY, Violet Akers Layman, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday,
January 23, 2001. She was preceded in death by her first husband,
John Paul Layman, and her second husband, Dewey William Henry. She
is survived by her son, David Layman and wife Linda of Daleville; son,
Lewis Layman and wife Carolyn of Apex, N.C.; stepdaughter, Rosemary
Thomas and husband Ray of Troutville; stepson, Michael Henry and wife
Gaynell of Roanoke; sisters, Mabel Barbour of Boones Mill, Louise
Hancock of Seagrove, N.C., and Virginia Kuchner of Stratford, N.J.;
brothers, Stafford Akers of Rocky Mount, Woodrow Akers of Winter
Garden, Fla., and Carroll Akers of Salem; grandchildren, Christy and
Scott Hedin, Karlton and Heather Layman, Jonathan Layman, Paula
Layman,
Bill Thomas, Chuck and Kim Thomas; great-grandchild, Kaylee Layman;
special neighbors, Charlie and Loulie Belle Argabright, and Calvin
and Garnet Hodges. Violet was employed as a beautician at Colonial
Beauty Shop. After her retirement she continued to style hair for her
family and friends. Violet enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking and
spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of First
Church of the Brethren for over 40 years. Violet enjoyed spending time
with her many friends at S & S Cafeteria and her walking buddies at
Crossroads Mall. The family would like to thank the MSICU staff at
Roanoke Memorial Hospital including UVA Medical Student, Todd Heaton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, January 26, 2001
at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. David R. Miller officiating.
Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will
receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 25,
at Oakey's North Chapel.

AKERS, Calvin C., 83, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, February 2, 2000.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Alvin Ashby and
Edna Naff Akers; also two brothers, Herman L. and Harry T. Akers. He
was a veteran of World War II U.S. Army Coast Artillery Pacific
Theater, a lifelong member of Belmont Baptist Church where he was
very active with the Sunday School Department. He was a grocery buyer
for over 50 years, 20 of which were with the Kroger Co. He is
survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen Mason Akers; one son and
daughter-in-law, Kevin D. and Catherine B. Akers; one grandson,
Andrew Mason Akers; two sisters, Mae A. Antel and Nancy A. Milam;
three sisters-in-law, Ruby D. and Marion B. Akers and Ruth M.
Slusser; one brother-in-law, James W. Slusser; a number of nieces and
nephews. A memorial service will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel on
Saturday, February 5, 2000 at 1 p.m. with Dr. Robert Wayne
officiating. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke
Chapel on Friday, February 4, 2000 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
