CROOKSVILLE - Fred W Ebert, 85, of McLuney (Crooksville Route 2), a prominent merchant and former postmaster, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday (Dec. 1) at Valley View Nursing Home in Lithopolis following a long illness. Mr. Ebert spent most of his life in McLuney where he owned and operated a general store and served as postmaster from 1911 until 1939 when postal service was discontinued at McLuney and put on the Crooksville route. He was active in community and civic affairs, especially baseball, having sponsored several baseball teams during the 1920's and 30's. He was born Nov. 3, 1884, in Morgan County, a son of James Milton and Anna E. Brown Ebert. His wife, Faye Lear Ebert, died in 1950. Mr. Ebert was a member of the League of Postmasters Association and Crooksville Eagles Lodge. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Alice Ebert Smith of Lithopolis; a son, Bill Lee Ebert of the home; a half-sister, mrs. Myrl Condit of Howard, Kan.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A son, Allen, died in 1951. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Chute-Wiley Funeral Home in New Lexington with Rev. Wauneta White officiating. Burial will be in Iliff Methodist Cemetery at McLuney. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the funeral home where Eagles services will be theld at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
