Notes:
According to his civil war pension file, George was born 21 Mar 1827 in
Elmira, Chemung County, New York. In 1855 or 56, he moved to Hillsboro
in Henry County Iowa where he lived with his first wife. He enlisted in
Company D, 14th Iowa Infantry on 28 Sep 1861. His wife died sometime
during the Civil War. He was taken prisoner on 24 Aug 1864 and held at
Cahaba Prison in Alabama. At about 3am the morning of 19 Jan 1865,
George participated in an attempt to escape. The escape was led by a
Captain Hanchette of a Tennessee Regiment. The escape failed and Capt
Hanchette was summarily executed. In the confusion of escape, George
received a saber wound to the inside of his right leg between the knee
and ankle. He managed to keep the wound hidden during a search and thus
saved his life. He was paroled from Cahaba about the 13th of March 1865
and then went to Vicksburg Mississippi, St. Louis Missouri, and then back
to Davenport Iowa where he mustered out on 8 May 1865.
He returned to Hillsboro, but having no family left, he only stayed about
five days. He wandered from place to place working on farms until the
fall of 1865 where he married Melissa McKeehan in Clark Co Missouri and
took up residence at Primrose-Lee Co-Iowa. In Oct/Nov 1867, he moved to
Vernon County Missouri where he lived until February 1883. From Feb till
Oct 1883, he lived in Catoosa-Cherokee Nation-Indian Territory and then
moved Fawn Township-Montgomery Co-Kansas. 1897 took George to Westfork -
Washington County - Arkansas, and then Chester - Crawford County -
Arkansas. Melissa died in August 1910, so George once again packed up
and moved to Tulsa County Oklahoma where he lived with his kids (Harry in
Checotah - McIntosh Co., Cora in Turley - Tulsa County, Hattie and Jesse
in Sand Springs - Tulsa County). At the time of his death, he was living
with Cora in Turley, but had taken ill at Jessie's house. He is buried
at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sand Springs, Oklahoma.
George worked as a blacksmith his entire grown life. Family legend has
it that he welded chains to cannonballs during the civil war. His civil
war record states that he served as a blacksmith throughout his military
career (but probably not while he was in prison).
He was not a large man. Roughly 5'2", 150 lbs, dark complexion with
light blue eyes.
I have a copy of George's Civil War pension file. A
listing of the documents and partial transcriptions can be found at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familysoup/gwcpension/index.html
A listing of the cards found in his service record are at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familysoup/cwservice/gwc_service.html
I have not yet located what unit he served with during the Mexican War.
It is possible that his service record from that may give some
some indication who his parents were.
from Karen Grimmer....
"I was told that George Culp played the violin"
possible parents for George Washington Culp
John Culp / Rebecca Hendy - no (not in 1830 or 1840 census)
Samuel Culp /Polly - no (not in 1830/1840 census)
Harry Culp / Berthia - no (not in 1830/1840 census)
John Culp - maybe (did he have a wife prior to Marie Teachman?)
John Culp / Marie Teachman - no - married in 1831
James Culp - probably not - too young
In the 1810census, there is an unidentified male 11-15 years old
in the the household of John and Rebecca. He does not appear to be
in the 1820 census. In 1850, an 8 year old Jacob shows up in
Rebecca's house (John's widow). Assuming Jacob is a grandson.
Jacob
does not fit any child of John and Rebecca's except the unidentified
male in 1810. It is possible that George could also be a son of this
unidentified male - I need to find him in 1830 and 1840 to verify.
