CHAS E LONGLEY
Charles E Longley, 88, native of Philo, died Wednesday morning in the
Ohio Masonic Home in Springfield. Mr Longley had been a resident of
Corning for many years prior to going to the Springfield home. He
was a retired New York Central Railroad engineer. The deceased was
born in Philo Jan 1, 1871. He was a member of the Corning Masonic
Lodge and the Corning Methodist Church. Surviving are two brothers,
Carlos Longley of Philo and Clarence E Longley of Crooksville, His
wife, Lora, and a sister, Mrs Cora Sheppard of Coshocton, preceded
him in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Friday
at the Masonic Home with burial in the Masonic Cemetery.

Veteran Railroader of Corning Retires
Corning - Charles Longley, engineer, retired Nov 1, after forty years
of railroading on the Ohio Central Lines of the New York Central.
Mr. Longley was born January 1, 1876 (sic 1871)at Philo, and attended school at
Philo. At age of fifteen started to work as cabin boy on a steamboat
on the Muskingum River. In 1902, he went to work on the Zanesville
Branch of the C & M. V. Railroad, now the Pennsylvania. In August,
1905, he came to Corning and started to work as a hostler on the T.
& . O. C. On July 5, 1906, he was given a position as fireman and
was promoted to engineer on November 11, 1910, which position he has
worked until his retirement. At the expiration of Mr. Longley's tour
of duty on October 31, he was presented with a letter from President
Metzman, together with a certificate and lapel button. Presentation
was made by Mr. J. H. Spooner, superintendent. J. W. Crowley,
assistant superintendent, was also present.
