Obituary (from Georgann Hunter's database)
Another pioneer citizen has joined the silent majority and the gloomy
monitor has darkened another household. A.R. HUNTER, one of
the oldest citizens of St. Marys, departed this life Friday, Jun 17,
1892, aged 67, 9 months and 19 days, Death had been momentary
expected for several days, yet it came with a suddeness that was
truly painful. He had just been conversing with his wife, and at a
moment when her back was turned the fatal summons come and the spirit
was carried to the God who gave it. Anderson R. Hunter was born in
Ross CO, OH, Aug 29, 1824 and about forthy-five years of his life were
spent in St. Marys. He was married to Mary Jane Blew (Bleu) , Oct 6,
1846, whose death occured May 6, 1865. There were no children by his
first wife. He was again married Nov 15, 1865 to Miss Julia A. Emerick,
11 children - 10 boys and one girl -- being the product of such marriage.
The wife and eight children survive him. The deceased was at one time
one of the most robust men in this section of OH. In fact, he was almost
a giant in strength and had a constitution of wonderful physical powers.
Several years ago, however, he recieved a fall, from which he sustained
injuries that followed him to his grave. Mr. Hunter had a eventful career,
and at one time was among the wealthiest of our citizens. The corroding
stream of misfortuen, however, reduced his possessions and several years
prior to his death he was obliged to struggle against the stream of fate.
He was industrious, however, and his frugality kept his home amply provided
with the necessaries of life. He was a good, peaceable citizen and always
entertained the popular respect. His occupation was stock buyer and
butcher, and during the war he was United States Marshal at this point.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Baumgardner Saturday
afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in Elm Grove Cemetery.
