Funeral arrangements for Oscar Lee Bowman, 36, Bradshaw farmer who
died Thursday at Hendrick Memorial, are pending at Kiker-Warren
Funeral Home. Word is awaited from a brother, Wayne A. Bowman of
Fairbanks, Alaska. A native of Oaklawn, Mrs. Bowman had lived in
Potosi most of his life, moving to Bradshaw about four years ago.
He was a member of Cedar Gap Church of Christ. Surviving are his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Terry Bowman, with whom he lived; two brothers,
Weldon A. of 1810 McCracken St. and Wayne A. of Fairbanks, Alaska,
with the the Armed Forces; two sisters, Mrs. Gene Bowen of Bradshaw,
and Mrs. J. W. Taylor of Tuscola; his grandmother, Mrs. Dora Frazier
of Houston; four nieces and two nephews.

"Information taken from Newspaper obituary from Ada Park's scrapbook,

After a distinguished service under General Washington in the
Revolutionary War, Colonel Hendy paddled up he Chemung River, then
the Tioga River, in a homemade canoe arriving in April 1788. After
surveying the land, he chose West Elmira, near Rorick's Glen, as a
suitable location for a permanent dwelling. With the aid of a bound
boy, Dan Hill, he constructed a substantial home, chimney of which
is still standing (in 1938). In October he made the tortuous trip by
river to Wilkes-Barre and back for his wife and three children,
Samuel, Rebecca, and Sallie. Rebecca, then five and the oldest, ran
up to the cabin ahead of the other children, thus winning her title
of first white child ever to touch local soil. Seven other children
were born to the Hendy's. Escapades of Col. Hendy and his family with
the indians, some friendly, some hostile; tales of his bravery and
prodigous strength became legend in the vicinity of Newtown, later
renamed Elmira. Always prominent in local civic affairs, Colonel
Hendy was chosen to throw up the first shovelful of earth for the
Chemung Canal in 1831, a project then of immense value to the county.
He died in 1840, and his body first interred in Wisner Park burying
ground has since been transferred to Woodlawn Cemetary.
