After his wife Marion, died in 1970, J.W. spent 5 months during the winter in Texas with his son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Ellen, and granddaughters, Marion, Terry and Helen, in College Station, TX. J.W. went south with the geese, and returned north with the geese. In 1973 he suffered a very painful attack of shingles from which he suffered the remainder of his life. He died in College Station from heart complications and is buried in Newton Cemetery, Nevada, MO.

from the Skelly Radio Program, September 20, 1947 "...J. W. Underwood bought one of the two log cabins left standing after soldiers burned Nevada..".

from "Nevada Daily Mail" - undated, titled "Vernon Farmer Wins Skelly Award": " ..the history of the farm, which dates back to the Civil War, indicates the super-human effort the Marquis family put into the farm to make it livable, let alone productive. In 1863, J. W. Underwood, grandfather of Marquis, bought the site and built a two-story structure that was erected with the help of slave labor. The house and farm passed to Marquis when he bought the property from his father, I.L. Marquis, and his grandmother, Ada Underwood, in 1936. A highway engineer until six years ago, Marquis did not move onto the farm until 1941. With the help of his wife and son, Marquis re-built and put the farm into operation."
