Roger A. "Doe" Hooper, 84, of New Lexington, entered into his heavenly
home on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at his residence. Roger was born in
San Toy on April 11, 1924, to the late Lee and Carrie Hooper. He was
deeply devoted to his wife, Dorothy; his son, Roger and wife, Debbie;
and his grandchildren, Clay and Nan. He attended New Lexington Bible
Church. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Carrie
Hooper; brothers, Fred "Ted" Hooper, Robert "Booge" Hooper; and
sister, Dorothy "Babe" Taylor. Roger entered the service on March 3,
1943, and received his basic training at Fort McClelland, Ala. He
departed from New York by ship to Oran, Africa. From there, he marched
and fought through Tunisia, the Algiers, Sicily, Italy, France and
Germany. Major battles include Anzio Beachhead and Monte Casino. His
feet were frozen in the French Alps and he was wounded by shrapnel in
his neck, shoulder and knee. To this day, shrapnel remains lodged in
his shoulder. Roger was a veteran of the United States Army and
proudly served his country in World War II. Decorations include Combat
Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater
Ribbon with four Battle Participation Stars (Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno,
Southern France, Rhineland), World War II Victory Medal and the
Presidential Unit Citation. When he returned from Europe he served
with the Military Police in New York. He was honorably discharged on
Oct. 23, 1945 as a private first class, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd
Infantry Division. In 1987 Roger retired from Owens Corning
Fiberglass with 37 years of dedication. He is survived by his loving
wife of 60 years, Dorothy; son, Roger, daughter-in-law, Debbie;
grandchildren, Clay and Nan; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Hooper,
brother-in-law, Ralph Barnett; and many nieces and nephews. Calling
hours will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. today, and one hour prior to
services on Saturday at Roberts Funeral Home, 304 Mill St., New
Lexington. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home
with Pastor Chris Brown officiating. Burial will be in New Lexington
Cemetery, with graveside military service by John Tague Post No. 188,
American Legion, New Lexington. Special thank you to many loving
friends for your needed help, to the Perry County Veterans Service
Commission, and to FairHoPe Hospice of Lancaster.

PETERS, Alvis Edward, 71, of Riner, died Thursday, July 29, 1993,
in the VA Medical Center, Salem. He was a veteran of World War II;
and a retired employee of Roanoke City Mills. He is survived by his
wife, Jean Graham Peters; daughter and son-in-law, Alva and Kenneth
Phillips, Riner; two granddaughters, Nicole K. Phillips and Valerie
N. Phillips both of Riner; four sisters, Mrs. M.B. (Elsie)
McFarland, Ms. Ocie Peters, Ms. Gertrude Peters, all of
Christiansburg, Mrs. Calvin (Weda) Boothe, Floyd. Funeral services
will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 1993, from the Richardson-Horne
Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Phil Simms and Rev. Raymond
Kelley with burial in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive
friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral
Home, Christiansburg.
