Carl Dean Harper, 68, of Salem, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at University Hospitals in Iowa City. Born May 27, 1929, in Henry County, he was the son of Richard Dean and Bertha Fenn Harper. On Oct. 16, 1982, he married Patricia Savage Broeker. Mr. Harper was a graduate of New London High School in New London. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He held the rank of sergeant, serving in Corps for 21 years. He retired from General Electric in 1991, after 15 years. He attended Salem Friends Church in Salem. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lori Beckman of Columbus, Ohio, and Pam Harper of Oregon; one stepdaughter, Kathryn Paulsen of Lone Rock, Wis.; one stepson, Tony Broeker of Burlington; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Bonita Pfeiffer of Avalon, Wis., Mary Suzanne Harper of New London and Helen Harper of Winfield; and one brother, William Harper of Glenwood. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be after noon today at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Harper will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Salem Friends Church in Salem, with the Rev. Tom Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery of New London, with military rites conducted by VFW Post No. 7641 of New London. A memorial has been established for Henry County Dialysis Unit of Mount Pleasant.
