TAPS SOUND FOR CIVIL WAR VET HERE THURSDAY
John R. Sheets, 80, a veteran of the Civil War, died at 7 o'clock Thursday

served a four-year enlistment in the artillery division. Surviving him are
three brothers, Phillip of McConnelsville, Joseph of Pleasantville, Thomas
of Xenia, a granddaughter,
Miss Louise Sheets and three step-children. He was a member of the M. P.
church at Stockport and the Grand Army of the Republic. The body was removed
to the Dean Funeral home where services will be held at 7:30 o'clock friday

John R. Sheets, in the Penitentiary from Morgan county, was pardoned
by the Governor, Friday afternoon. He is a two-year man. His time
would have been out in September next. The Governor says as the
crime was committed while he was intoxicated, as he is represented to
be a good citizen when sober, and had a good army record, the pardon
was granted in the belief that it would aid him in his determination
to become a good and useful citizen. Senator Pond asked for the
pardon, and his request was supplemented by that of many other good
citizens. The crime was cutting with intent to wound.
The Athens Messenger, Athens Co., Ohio, Thursday, November 23, 1882
The return, last week, of John R Sheets, of McConnelsville, to the
Penitentiary is a lesson that conditionally pardoned convicts can
relect upon with profit. They find now that under the new law of
last winter they have to keep their promises. Sheets was pardoned
last May on condition that he abstain from the use of intoxicating
drinks, as they got him into trouble before, and he is in fact a
dangerous man when drinking. He broke his pledge and has been sent
back to serve the remainder of the term that was left when he was
pardoned. This is the first case under the new low of the return of
a prisoner, although it has been attempted in different cases.
