Notes:
From Georgann Hunter's dbase...
Samuel in the 1830 Census for Mercer Co., OH, living in the Center Twp.
Samuel moved to what was then almost a wilderness in Illinois from
Ohio in 1836 with his family. His father died soon after and Samuel
and his two brothers helped his mother farm.
Samuel L. Hunter, oldest son of William and Jane (Carr) Hunter, was
born in Ohio, January 29, 1820 and died April 15, 1902, at the home
of his daughter, Deliah Price, Agenda, Kansas. He was married to
Lydia M. Heisler, June 5, 1851, who died February 24, 1901. To their
union were born twelve children, two of whom died when small and ten
are living to mourn the loss of a loving parent. All his married
life, he lived one and a half miles west of Terre Haute until about
fifteen years ago when they went to Sherman County, Kansas, to live
with their children. Besides his children he leaves one aged brother
in Oklahoma. Several years ago, he united with the Christian Church
and died with perfect faith in his savior. Death was caused by a
stroke of Paralysis which broke a blood vessel on his brain.
Published in a Henderson Co. newspaper, not sure which one.

Notes:
George Harold Longley was born 5 May 1893 near Winslow, Washington
County, Arkansas (not very far from Van Buren). (His WWI draft
registration card lists Ft Smith as his birthplace). By age 17, George
was living on a cattle ranch near Sand Springs Oklahoma and worked
as a cow-herder. His folks were living near Turley a few miles away.
Just three years later he married Lenora Hunter in Tulsa Oklahoma
and began working for the Sinclair Oil Company in Drumright, Shamrock
and finally Covington Oklahoma in Garfield County. Although he was
the prime age for WWI, he was an oilworker and the need for oil kept
him out of service. George and Lenora had six children together
with two of them still living today (Nov 2001). They were married
52 years when death finally claimed George at the relative young age
of 68. Lenora passed away just four years later in 1965. They are
both buried in Highland Cemetery, Winfield, Kansas.
After spending Thanksgiving day (Nov 2002) with Uncle Leonard, I've
tried to type up some of the stories he related...
George raised his family in the oilfields of Covington Oklahoma. He
was good at gardening and had a garden bigger than an acre. I guess
he liked getting a head start and put the seeds out early. Leonard
remembers carrying water with Harold down to the garden to wash the
frost off. George used to brag about "his" gardening skills, but Leonard
seems to remember it was him and Harold that did all the carrying,
planting, weeding, and picking. Nora would can the produce and got
over 40 quarts of peas
one year. That's a lot of pea shucking. One year he got a bumper
crop of beets. Nora canned quite a bit, but George figured out how
to make home-brew out of the rest of them. He made his home-brew down in a root
cellar. One time he went down to the cellar to check on the brew and
couldn't get out. (I asked Leonard what'd he do when he got stuck in
in the cellar and Leonard said he just sat down and waited
until he could find his way out - that was all he could do). A man
down the road had a bunch
of figs sent to him and didn't know what to do with them. George
offered to make some wine out of them. When the man come over to see
how it was turning out - neither one of them could get out of the
cellar. Nora was good at canning and canned most of everything. One
year, George traded a wrench for a small bull. That was a year when
they were killing off all the small bulls - couldn't afford to feed 'em.
George butchered the bull (he was real good at butchering) and Nora
canned most of the meat. Another year he got a pig real cheap. He
didn't use any of those fancy scrapers to get the hair off - he
just had a knife, but could scrape faster than most with that.
George's son-in-law Robert Hollis died in a prisoner of war camp
in Korea. His daughter Ethel went to work to support her and her
children, so they (the children) spent lots of time with their grandpa.
The oldest, Dale remembers fondly of the afternoon fishing trips he
took with just him and his grandpa. By this time,
George had developed Diabetes and wasn't supposed to drink. Nora kept
a stern rule over him and he kept to it - when she was around. The
fact that their home (Oxford Kansas) was in a dry county reinforced the
edict. On weekends, George would take his grandson Dale fishing with
him. They would cross over the Oklahoma line where George bought a
small flask of rum and a cold can of Coke. He used just a
taste of the coke, so Dale got the rest of the can - and that was a
real treat back then. George would find a nice shade tree, sip from
his little bottle and go to sleep in the shade. Dale was fishing on
the bank with his cold can of soda until Grampa woke up. Then they'd
go back home with their secret and their peaceful day at the creek.
George could be gruff at times. His son Harold carried a fork-scar
in his hand till the day he died. Apparently, there was only one
piece of chicken left at the dinner table and Harold thought he'd
claim it.
