Some researchers say his parents were:

Mary Polly Hubbell 1797 Virginia aft 1860 Trimble, Athens, Ohio

However....
In 1850, they have 9 year old Nimrod Houser living with them.
Nimrod is the orphan of Nathan Houser and Elsy Savage Houser
Elsy was the daughter of Robert and Mary Savage
Robert died 10 Jan 1850 in Morgan Co., Ohio (6 months before the census)
Don't know when Mary died.

So, the question is... Is John a son or a grandson of Robert/Mary Savage?

I'm pretty sure I have Mary (wife of Robert) accounted for in 1850.
The Mary/Polly Savage with John is nearly 20 years younger than Mary, wife of Robert. Assuming Mary/Polly Savage is John's mother, then he is not likely a son of Robert/Mary.

Could he be a grandson?
The 1861 Savage Family Tree mentions James,Whalen,Nimrod,George as sons of Robert (& Mary). Whalen is the only male listed as deceased in 1861.

In order for John to be a grandson, there would have to have been another male child born prior to 1802, and died prior to 1830. This is still a possibility as there are two unaccounted for names in the 1830 census record of Robert/Mary.
1 unidentified female, age 30-40 (Mary/Polly would have been 33) 1 unidentified male, age 5-10 (John would have been 8)

I guess there is still a possibility that John is a son of Robert/Mary and that Mary/Polly Savage is an unmarried sister who lived with John.
