SERIOUSLY CRUSHED
Last evening Wm. (sic Reuben) Longley of 95 (sic 195) Clay street,
was very painfully hurt
while at the Wabash station viewing the reception of President
McKinley. The crowd was possibly the largest ever assembled at the
south side stations, and it was so dense that it was impossible to
move about.
The east bound Wabash passenger train was late and pulled into
this crowd slowly. Mr. Longley tried to get out of the way of a
baggage car which was being pushed down for this train, but the
crowd fairly pushed him between the cars. He was severely squeezed
about the chest and was removed to his home in care of Dr. Lomas.
He suffered much internal injury and is still very ill.

William Longley, of 95 Clay street was severely injured while
waiting for the arrival of the presidential train at the Wabash
depot Thursday evening. The east bound Wabash train, which was over
an hour late, pulled in a few moments before the train bearing the
president and party, and it was necessary to
switch the baggage car for some purpose. Mr Longley was standing
on the track immediately behind the baggage car, and was unable to get
out of the way in time. He was crushed between the baggage car and
another car when it was shunted back and was badly injured about
the upper part of the body. Dr. Lomas, who happened to be near at
hand, attended and had Mr Longley removed to his home on Clay street,
where the doctor made a careful examination of his injuries. It is
thought that the patient is injured internally and his condition is
quite serious.

LONGLEY ASKS FOR DAMAGES
He was crushed at the Wabash depot October 5
Claims that the trainmen on the McKinley train were Responsible
for the Injuries
In the superior court, through his attorneys, Ryan & Ryan, Reuben
S. Longley this afternoon commenced suit for $1,999.99 damages against
the Wabash railway. Mr. Longley was crushed in the big crowd at the
Wabash depot on the evening of October 5, when President McKinley
and party passed through the city. The complaint alleges that there
was a crowd of between 6,000 and 7,000 people on the platform and
tracks of the Wabash railway and that the crowd was forced against
the engine and cars of the train. Near the tracks had been
constructed a heavy railing or fence and between this fence and the
cars Mr Longley was held helplessly. The allegations further argue that
the trainmen "purposely, willfully and intentionally, without use
of ordinary care, start said engine eastward, although warned by
said crowd not to do so, and willfully and intentionally, without use
of ordinary care, ran said locomotive and train upon and against
plaintiff with the purpose and intention to purposely and
intentionally injure plaintiff." Plaintiff was crushed between the
cars and the crowd and had five ribs fractured, his hand mangled an
torn, his face bruised, two teeth loosened and suffered other
injuries which have affected his liver and spleen and confined him to
bed every since. It is alleged plaintiff earned $3 a day and
hereafter will be unable to earn that sum, and therefore damages are
ased in the sum of $1,999.99.

Jury Gives Him $729.54 For His Injuries
The Jury which has been hearing the case of Reuben Longley against
the Wasbash railway company, brought in a sealed verdict last night.
This morning when opened it contained an award of $729.54 to the
injured man. Longley was in the crowd that greeted President McKinley
when he passed through the city, and was crushed and injured internally
by the moving of a train. The case will probably be appealed to the
supreme court.

REVERSED THE JURY
The jury in the case of Longley against the Wabash railway returned
a verdict two weeks ago in favor of the plaintiff Reuben Longley,
awarding him $729 for injuries received at the south depot while
President McKinley was passing through the city. To-day the case
was reargued on the interrogatories, Judge Zollars and Judge Hammond,
with Attorney Stewart appearing for the defendant. The result was
that Judge O'Rourke reversed the verdict of the jury and gave judgement
for the defendant on the interrogatories.

BEES CAUSE A PANIC.
MUCH EXCITEMENT ON COLUMBIA STREET THIS MORNING.
A Swarm of Bees Swoops Down on Pedestrains, Teamsters and Workmen -
Finally Hived.
Between 9 and 10 o'clock this morning a large swarm of bees swooped
down east Columbia street and settled near the corner of Clinton
street. Horses began to dash about madly, and the engineer running
the steam roller on Columbia street on the paving work was driven
from his seat. Two or three delivery wagon horses near the corner
were badly stung, and two of the drivers had very narrow escapes from
runaway accidents.
Small boys in the vicinity thought they would make merry and wage war
against the bees. In the end the barefooted boys came out second best.
Some of them are nursing swollen cheeks, puffed eyes and stinger-
decorated legs.
There was a panic among pedestrians for about half an hour. Those
watching the bees were always "inocently" neglectful in warning
pedestrians. Then there would follow wild gesticulations and amusing
antics. This kept up until Mr. Reuben Longley, a well known hukster,
who resides at 1011 Clay street, happened along. He wanted the
swarm of bees for the honey they will make and he at once set about
hiving them. No hive was at hand and he secured a cracker barrel. He
then threw up several handsful of gravel and this bewildered the
flying swarm. He then secured a long stick and held it in the midst of
the bees, and in their bewildered state they soon began lighting on
the stick. In a short time they had all landed on the stick, and
he had no trouble in shaking them off into the barrel. The swarm was
a very large one and the stick got very heavy before they had all
alighted. The barrel was covered up with a piece of canvas and
tonight Mr. Longley expects to take the bees to his home and have them
in a comfortable hive in celebration of the Fourth of July. All
afternoon there were bees flying about the corner and all
pedestrians and horses had to beware.

TAXI UPSETS WHEN CAR HITS ROAD SAND PILE
Several Spilled When Ford Turns on Side; Other Slight Collision
Lawrence Schallenbarger, 2130 Lafayette street, suffered severe
bruises and several others were more or less shaken up when a
Ford taxi turned over on the road on the way from Lagrange to
this city Sunday afternoon. The driver hit a sand pile in the rad and the
vehicle, which was topheavy, swung over on its side. It was at
first thought that Schallenbarger's leg was broken, but an
examination revealed nothing more serious than several
painful bruises.
Ruben Longley, 1916 Fourth street, was knocked from
his wagon at Kansas street and Fairfield avenue yesterday
afternoon, when his vehicle was hit by an automobile driven
by Al Wagner. Mr. Longley had his hip severely injured.
F. B Weaver of Churubusco and M. Richardson of Henderson,
Ky., collided at Main street and Maiden lane with their
automobiles yesterday afternoon. Both machines were damaged.
