Notes:

Called "Uncle Rass" by his nieces and nephews, "Merley" by some who knew him.

Merlin registered for the WWI draft on 24 Aug 1918 in Creek County. He listed his employment as Paragon Oil Co, Shamrock, Oklahoma
Merlin served in WWI and went to France. Upon returning in 1918, he married Mattie Kelley in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. In 1920, Merlin and Mattie were living in Shamrock, Oklahoma and then sometime later moved to Marshall (just south of Covington - Marshall Twp, Logan Co T19N, R4W). Merlin was an oifield worker and worked for Shell Oil.

Family memory is that he died near Wichita Falls of Tuleremia (rabbit fever). He is buried in Bristow City Cemetery. His wife Mattie is buried in Fresno, so her plot in Bristow remains empty.

followup: find census 1910 - no luck so far. The family was living near Turley Oklahoma, but reviewing the census has not located them.

GREENFIELD -- Stephen R. Longley, 55, of 345 Federal St. died Wednesday (1-9-08) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center. He was born in Baltimore, Md., July 13, 1952, the son of Ralph W. and Dorothy (Leonard) Longley. He had been a resident of Greenfield for several years. Survivors, besides his mother of Greenfield, include three brothers, Gary Longley of West Springfield, Morris Longley of Colrain and Ernest Longley of Northampton; three nieces, Laura Longley of Chicopee, Meagan Ruffing of Mount Vernon, Mo., and Jessica Longley of South Hadley, and a nephew, Donald Longley of Abilene, Texas. He was predeceased by his sister, Joanne, who died Jan. 28, 2006. There are no services. Burial will be in Plain Cemetery, Ashfield, in the spring. Cards of sympathy may be sent to 80 Brush Hill Ave., No. 28, West Springfield, MA 01089, in care of Gary Longley. Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls/Greenfield, is in charge of arrangements.

Thompson Culp of Miami, Fla.; a nephew John J. Culp and a neice Mrs. Vaughn of Wilawana. The body is in the Page Funeral Home, Wellsburg, where the funeral will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. Revs. George K.Hamilton and George Burroughs. Mountain View Cemetery, Wellsburg. Kindly omit flowers.
