Helen Longley Gleason, 87, of Hesston, Kan., and formerly of McGaheysville, died Thursday, March 22, 2007, at the Schowalter Villa Retirement Home, where she had lived for several years. Mrs. Gleason was born Jan. 3, 1920, and was a daughter of Willie Conn and Mable Clara Moore Longley. She attended Pineville Church of the Brethren. She graduated from McGaheysville High School in 1938 and accepted a position in civil service with the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C. in 1940. Her husband, Russell Gleason, preceded her in death April 21, 2004. He was a medical corpsman in the Navy from 1941 to 1973 and they lived in Japan for a number of years. She worked in an English speaking school, studied flower arrangement and gourmet cooking. She enjoyed writing and working crossword puzzles. Survivors include three sisters, Ruth L. Nail of Dover, Del., Tamara L. Crabill of Bridgewater, and June L. Burner of McGaheysville; two brothers, Deyerle R. Longley of Greenville, S.C., and Bill Longley of Dover, Del.; and a stepson, Dana Gleason of Hesston, Kan. A memorial service was held March 28 at Schowalter Retirement Home in Hesston, Kan. Arrangements were handled by Peterson Funeral Home, Newton, Kan.
