Shomber, Harold, 94, died Monday, March 25, 2002 at St. Luke's South, Overland Park. Mr. Shomber will lie in state until service; visitation with family 7 to 8 p.m. today, both at Dengel and Son Mortuary; service 10 a.m. Friday, Calvary Baptist Church; burial will follow at Princeton (Kan.) Cemetery. Mr. Shomber was born Jan. 4, 1908 in Homewood, Kan., to the late Henry Oliver Shomber and Nellie Lucinda (Hanne) Shomber. He grew up in the Ottawa area and later lived in Steamboat Springs, Colo. He lived in Wichita for 17 years, Anchorage for one year and Columbus, Ohio for two years, before returning to Ottawa. He graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1926, attended one year at Ottawa University and two years at Kansas State University. He worked as an auto mechanic in Ottawa and was later co-owner of an Oldsmobile garage in Steamboat Springs, Colo. for six years. During World War II, he worked seven years in the instrumentation lab at Boeing Wichita and later owned two jewelry stores there, working nine years as a certified jeweler and watchmaker. He worked six years as vice president and general manager of Stevens Enterprises Inc., Wichita and was sent to Alaska to open the Alaska U-Select It. He worked two years for Dulock Tool Co. in Columbus, Ohio and then as a construction superintendent and vice-president of Varecho Building Corp., Ottawa. For 11 years, he was one of the managers for the Ottawa Senior Center. Mr. Shomber spent over 40 years in dedicated church work, serving as elder, deacon, Sunday School superintendent, chairman of the finance and trustee committees, Bible class teacher for many years and served three years as chairman of the church board. At the time of his death, he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Ottawa. He was instrumental in the formation of the West Wichita Community Council, serving in several positions, including president. He served as past president of the Wichita Property Owners Associat ion, past president of the Wichita Voter's Association, past president of the Wichita Watchmakers Guild, past plant chairman of Boeing Local No. 834, life member and past president of Ottawa Sertoma Club, serving two years as Kansas Sertoma governor, Franklin County Silver Haired legislator for three years, Franklin County treasurer of the Salvation Army for seven years, a member of Ottawa Lodge No. 18 A.F. and A.M. for over 50 years and a member of Scottish Rite Lodge of Lawrence for over 50 years. On May 1, 1936, he married Letha Irene Nitcher in Lebo, Kan. She preceded him in death on July 27, 1996. Preceded in death by sister, Dorothy Marie Shambaugh and brothers, Clinton Oliver Shomber, Eldon Frank Shomber. Survivors: son, Henry Albert Shomber of Normandy Park, Wash.; daughter, Carolyn (Shomber) Rodenberg of Waynesboro, Va.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
