LONGLEY - suddenly, of paralysis, on January 27, 1879, Samuel
Longley, aged 72 years and 4 months.
Gone Home, away from every earthly sorrow,
His Bible lay still on the little stand.
His much loved ???? Book lay beside.
He will not need them in the better land.
Oh! how we miss him; wherrence or we roam,
May we all meet him in his heavenly home.
His funeral will take place from Starr Church on this (Wednesday)
afternnon, at three o'clock.

The Jefferson Post, Ashe Co., North Carolina, Thursday, Sep 7, 2000
Horatio Dwight Quessenberry, 86, was remembered at memorial services
held Sept. 5 at the West Jefferson United Methodist Church. Rev.
Hayward Morrison and Rev. A.B. Weaver officiated. Burial followed
in the Cranberry Cemetery in Laurel Springs. Mr. Quessenberry was
born in Floyd County, Va. to Percy and Ola Quessenberry. He was
preceded in death by his wife, Jean Reeves Quessenberry. He was a
member of the West Jefferson United Methodist Church. He graduated
from Virginia Tech in 1934 and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He served in the U.S. Army as a captain in infantry, he was a World
War II veteran where he served in Germany, Italy and France. He
worked for the Surry County, N.C. Public School System as a teacher.
During the 1940s, Mr. Quessenberry served as the Ashe County, N.C.
Agricultural Extension Agent. During the 1950s, he served as a
livestock specialist in Raleigh with the North Carolina Department
of Agriculture until his retirement in 1976. He is survived by his
son, Frank Quessenberry, West Jefferson; three daughters, Barbara
Derman, East Lansing, Mich., Betsy Griffin, Joplin, Mo., and
Marion Hinson, Marshville; and five grandchildren. Memorials may
be made to the West Jefferson United Methodist Church, PO Box 826,
West Jefferson, NC 28694. Badger Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
