Fisher Made "Big Boner" When He Picked on Longley to Drive
Clarence Longley, the captor of Carl Fisher, youthful gunman, who will be tried
for murder if Jailer William Morpeth succumbs to Saturday's bullet wounds, is
a Spanish-American War veteren, former marshal at Crooksville and, until last
year, mayor of the Perry county community. He is familiarly known in his home
town as "Kid" Longley. When Fisher singled out Longley as the driver for the
automobile which he had commandeered for his escape, he had more than met his
equal in strength and strategy. Fisher had carefully laid plans for his
delivery from jail but had not reckoned on delivering himself into the hands of
a former peace officer who during his term as marshal had learned to cope with
dangerous situations. Longley at his home today said that he did not have time
to fear for his safety or to immediately plan an avenue of escape from the
gunman. He did not expect to capture Fisher but as the few minutes elapsed
from the time he entered the automobile until he stopped at the bridge, an
opportunity presented itself and Longley capitalized on it. Driving at
breakneck speed along the course from Fifth street and Fountain alley to the
Sixth stree bridge, Longley's mind quickly developed a plan which was timed
perfectly. He said that he could have grasped the gun several times as the
machine sped along but he was afraid to let go of the steering wheel as the car
would probably have careened into the crowd of shoppers in the downtown
district. However, at the bridge he put his plan into operation. He would
stop the automobile, unexpectedy direct Fisher's glance away from him and grab
the gun. He knew he must not fumble his opportunity and at the proper time pounced on Fisher and twisted the gun away from him. When he returned to police headquarters, he found Mrs Longley, nearly distracted over his welfare, waiting for him. Mrs Longley described the affair as "the most exciting and harrowing shopping trip she had ever experienced."
