James Farr Longley, a longtime resident and retired executive vice
president of West Texas Utilities Co., died Friday night. Mr.
Longley, 73, of 4021 N. 10th, died at 10 p.m. Friday at his home of
an apparent heart attack. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in St.
Paul United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lloyd Mayhew, pastor, and the
Rev. Ira Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial
Park. Born Aug. 11, 1903, in Seymour, Mr. Longley grew up on a West
Texas farm and attended a rural school near his house. While
attending Seymour High School, Mr. Longley worked at a grocery store.
Following his graduation in 1920, he began studies at Texas A&M
University. In 1924, he was graduated with a bachelor of science
degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Longley married Hazel Powell,
April 20, 1924, in Megarel. While teaching in the electrical
engineering department at Texas A&M, Mrs. Longley came to Abilene in
the summer of 1926 seeking experience in the electric industry. He
bagan work at WTU that summer. That summer job turned into a career
spanning four decades. He first worked in a substation crew, working
on relays and circuit breakers. When the summer came to a close.
Mr. Longley stayed on with WTU. In 1927, Mr. Longley became chief
dispatcher and was later promoted to transmission engineer. He was
elected to the board of directors of WTU in 1953 and was elected a
vice president two years later. He served as superintendent of
production and engineering from 1954 to 1960 when he assumed the
responsibilites of general superintendent. From 1964 until his
retirement in 1968, Mr. Longley served as executive vice president of
WTU. Mr. Longley was a member of the Abilene Lions Club, St. Paul
United Methodist Church and the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers. He was named to Who's Who in America in
1967. "Jim Longley was more than just an engineer and executive,
he was a man very interested in people and serving people." said Rob
Kennedy, chairman of the WTU board, "He was one of the men who helped
put together the company as it is today." Survivors include his
wife, a daughter, Mrs. E. F. Mullikin of 534 Weswood; a son, J, F,
Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Avisa Howe of 2433 N. 3rd. four
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be
Joseph Powell, Durwood Chalker, Bill Sayles, Ellison Gerlach, Joe
Powell and Joe Gordon.

Mary Elizabeth Whyte Finsterwald, 87, the widow of Charles Herbert
Finsterwald of Fairway Drive in Nicholasville, died Jan. 10, 2001 at
her home after a brief illness. She was a member of the St. Luke
Catholic Church and the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth
Whyte. Survivors include two children and their spouses, Phillip Mead
Finsterwald and Jo Ann, Charlene "Herbie" Doolin and Doug;
grandchildren and their spouses, P. Michael and Laura Finsterwald,
Mark Alan and Lili Finsterwald, David Blair Finsterwald, Kim Doolin
and her fiancee, David Young, Doug Doolin, Jr., and Hannah Doolin and
Priscilla Finsterwald; two special nieces, Bev Stoncel and Mary Jane
Dean; and special friends, Pat Riley and Nancy Clark. She was
preceded in death by four brothers, Jack, Meade, Charles and Joseph
Whyte and two sisters, Regina Whyte and Nancy Clark. Funeral services
were held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Luke Catholic Church.
Burial followed in Maple Grove Cemetery. Contributions may be made
to Jessamine County Hospice.
