Letitia Stevens, known as Tish in local and regional art circles, died on September 13, 2003, in an Abilene hospital. She was born in Batesville, Arkansas, on January 5, 1923, to N.A. and Ruth Longley. After attending public schools in Batesville, she enrolled in Harding College, Searcy, Arkansas, where she met and fell in love with fellow student William Clark Stevens. After graduation, she taught in Arkansas public schools, and Clark served in the U.S. military during World War II. They were married in Hot Springs, Arkansas in January 1944. At the war's end, her teaching helped make it possible for her husband to earn his Ph.D. in Biology from Vanderbilt University. Upon achieving this goal, they moved to Searcy where he taught at Harding University for 18 years. During these years, two daughters, Diane and Patti Lu, were born to them, making their family complete. In 1967, the family moved to Abilene, where Clark served as head of the biology department of Abilene Christian University. During this time, Letitia enjoyed discovering and developing her artistic abilities and acquiring a large circle of friends in the artistic communities in and around Abilene. She was a member and officer of National League of American Pen Women and Creative Arts Club, both of which she enjoyed thoroughly. Many of her beautiful paintings received blue ribbon awards in various exhibitions. The paintings she gave to members of her family are indeed cherished. She was preceded in death in 2000 by the love of her life, her devoted husband of 56 years, Clark Stevens. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane Wilson and husband Jerry of Abilene and Patti Concepcion and husband Tomas of San Juan, Puerto Rico; three grandsons, Greg Wilson and wife Elizabeth of Dallas, Jimmy Wilson and wife Seanne of Harlingen, and Benjamin Mullings of Scottsdale, Arizona; two granddaughters, Camille Joyner and husband Stacy of Deltona, Florida, and Tammy Aponte and husband Albert of Richmond, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Haley and Alexandra Joyner and Jonathon Aponte; one sister, Sarah McAuley of Garland; and one brother, Bill Longley of Festus, Missouri. Letitia was warmhearted and loving and beloved by her family and friends. The funeral service is scheduled for Monday afternoon, September 15, at 1:30 in the chapel of University Church of Christ with Dr. Eddie Sharp officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home. Family visitation is set for 3:00 to 5:00 Sunday afternoon in the living room of Hillcrest Church of Christ. Those wishing to make memorial donations may choose Hendrick Hospice Care or the Clark Stevens Endowed Scholarship at ACU.
