RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor John
W. "Bill" Longley for the many significant contributions he has made
to the citizens of Stamford; and
WHEREAS, A resident of that city for the past 63 years, he has been
well regarded by all who have known him as a dedicated and
industrious member of the community, and he served his fellow
citizens with integrity and distinction as a member of the Stamford
City Council for four years; and
WHEREAS, His tenure was marked by many accomplishments, the most
noteworthy of which was the construction of Lake Stamford; the lake
will ensure that the community will have an adequate water supply
well into the coming century; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Longley continued to work for the betterment of the
community outside of public office, serving for six years as chairman
of the city's Cemetery Board; his reputation for civic-mindedness
was further established by his long tenure as an esteemed board
member of the Texas Commission for the Blind; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Longley is well regarded in political circles for his
exemplary service to the Democratic party, and he contributed greatly
to its strength in the region as party chairman of Jones County in
1975; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Longley began his deeply fulfilling service to the
people of the 17th Congressional District as manager of U. S.
Representative Charlie Stenholm's campaign in 1978, and he capably
and efficiently responded to constituents' concerns as manager of
the congressman's district office for 16 years until his retirement
on March 31, 1995; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his lifetime, he has demonstrated an abiding
commitment to civic concerns, and he marshalled his abundant energy
to serve as chairman of Stamford Goodfellows for five years; he also
worked to address issues vital to the local business community as
president of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce, which honored him for
his many outstanding contributions as its Man of the Year in 1992;
and
WHEREAS, A warm and caring individual, he has enjoyed the many close
friendships he has formed over the years as a 33-year member of the
Stamford Lions Club, and he has graciously served his fellow members
both as president and as district governor; he was honored for his
outstanding work with the Ambassador of Good Will Award, which is
the highest accolade bestowed by Lions International, and he further
distinguished himself by being the first Texan to receive this
prestigious honor without holding an international office with the
organization; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Longley is a man who has worked tirelessly for the
betterment of his community throughout his distinguished lifetime,
and he is truly worthy of special praise and recognition at this
time; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
Legislature hereby commend John W. "Bill" Longley for the many
significant contributions he has made to the citizens of Stamford
and extend to him warmest best wishes for continued success and
happiness in the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for
Mr. Longley as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
Representatives.

STAMFORD - John William "Bill" Longley, district manager for U.S.
Representative Charles Stenholm and a frequent visitor to Snyder,
died Thursday, Nov. 30, in a Stamford nursing home. Funeral service
for Mr. Longley, 76, was held Sunday in the First Baptist Church.
Burial followed in the Highland Memorial Cemetery. Born in Dallas,
he married Merdell Green and operated a grocery store in Stamford
before becoming manager of the 17th Congressional District for Rep.
Stenholm. Mr. Longley, a Baptist, was active in the Stamford United
Way and had served on the Texas Commission for the Blind. Survivors
include his wife, Merdell Longley of Stamford; a daughter, Phyllis
Taylor of Van Horn; and two grandsons.

Meredith Joseph Watts, 85, of Decatur died 4:13 p.m. Thursday
(March 18, 1999) in Imboden Creek Living Center. Private graveside
services will be Tuesday in Fairlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 6
to 8 p.m. Monday in Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home.
Mr. Watts was born in Decatur on March 16, 1914, the son of F. Joseph
and Edith Meridith Watts. He was a mortgage banker and retired in
1986. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Country
Club of Decatur and numerous business clubs and community
organizations over the years. He was a World War II Army veteran and
a M.P. in the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division. He married Bette Jane
Raffington in 1939. She preceded him in death on June 18, 1985.
Surviving are his son, Stephen Raffington Watts and wife Diana of
Naples, Fla.; daughter, Sally and husband Fredrick L. Olson of Las
Vegas, Nev.; grandson, Stephen Olson and wife Tess of Las Vegas;
granddaughter, Kate Olson of Las Vegas; great-grandson, Jacob Olson
of Las Vegas; special friend, Barbara Hamilton. He was preceded in
death by his parents, wife, one brother and one sister.
