Was deafened by a rebel shell bursting a few feet from his head at the battle of Mission Ridge and crippled up from rheumatism he contracted at Andersonville Prison in Georgia.

He was charged with desertion from 4 Nov 1862 to 17 Mar 1863. He was restored to duty without trial, but upon conditions that he be confined for a time equal to the desertion, and then serve for that time again. There is no further record, indicating that those conditions were likely met. In the papers, he denies he ever deserted.
