Young Man Drowned in River Sunday
John Whiteaker Loses Life While in Swimming at Mouth of Tan Trough. John Whiteaker, age 22 years, son of Wm.Whiteaker, who resides five miles northwest of here, was drowned in White River at the mouth of Tan Trough Creek, four miles up the river from Calico Rock, Sunday afternoon at about four o'clock while in swimming with three other young men. The body was recovered about an hour and a half later only a few feet from where he was seen to go down. The young man and three others of the neighboring community, Joe, Elmer and Lloyd Marchant, were swimming in the river and the unfortunate young man stated his intention of swimming to the other side. When at mid-stream he turned back and swam to within forty or fifty feet of the bank and called to the other boys to come to him. They got in a boat a short distance up-stream and started to his rescue, but he went under and drowned before the others could reach him. It is the supposition that the young man either was seized with cramps while swimming the river or else became exhausted and got scared, for he is said to have been a fairly good swimmer. The alarm was quickly spread and the first to reach the scene were Home Jennings, Walter Hicks, Jim Mayfield and Walter Lucy, who immediately began a search for the body, and was found after a short search by Hicks and Jennings, who were dragging the bottom of the river with their feet while swinging to the boat and it was in this manner that the body was brought to the surface. The water at that place was between five and six feet deep and young Whiteaker went under in a whirl caused by the current of the water. People gathered for miles around to volunteer in searching for the body and after recovery persistent attempts were made to bring about resuscitation, but without avail. The body was removed to the home of deceased and burial took place at the Staggs Cemetery Monday afternoon, funeral services being conducted by Rev. Dave Hively. Johnnie Whiteaker was known to everyone in this vicinity as a young man of exemplary habits, who was held in the highest esteem and was a young man of real worth. This fateful event caused a shock to everyone.
