Verna Wilson
MOLINE - Verna Geraldine Wilson, 90, longtime resident of rural Moline, died Nov. 22, 2003, at Elk Manor Nursing Home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. Pastor Kim Wilcox will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery. A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church of Moline. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard. Wilson was born April 13, 1913, at Murfreesboro, Ark., to Viola (Keller) and Otis Everett Buchanan. At the age of two, she moved with her family to Severy, where they made their home before moving to the Longton and Elk Falls area. After graduating from high school, she completed normal training and taught in rural schools. On Dec. 24, 1936, she married Glen LeRoy Wilson in Bartlesville, Okla In 1938 they moved to their present home in the Star neighborhood west of Moline and lived there until moving to Burlingame in the 1940s. A few years later, they returned to Elk County where they operated a movie theater in Grenola. They continued to operate their farm west of Moline and also owned and operated the Moline Locker for several years. Wilson devoted many years to caring for her disabled son, Merwyn, until his death in 1978. She also cared for her husband who was disabled in a farm tractor accident in 1968. After his death on Jan. 9, 1993, she continued to operate her farm until entering the Elk Manor Nursing Home in 2001. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Nicholson, Salina, and Donna Smith, Pittsburg; a sister, Bernice Cain, Moline; four grandchildren four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
