Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN) - July 13, 1998
BUCHANAN - Harold Norris Ashby, 76, retired employee of Ford
Motor Co. and retired farmer, died of leukemia Saturday at
Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Services will be at
2 p.m. Tuesday at Ridgeway Funeral Home with burial in
Hillcrest Cemetery in Paris. Mr. Ashby, the husband of
Lorene Woods Ashby, also leaves a daughter, Sharon
Brodzinski of Buchanan; a son, James Harold Ashby of
Windham, Ohio; a sister, Juanita Giste of Iuka, Miss.;
three brothers, J. C. Ashby of Winchester, Dillard Ashby
of Lobelville and Donald Ashby of Mansfield, seven
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Grew up in Ashley Co., Arkansas near Hamburg (northeast of Crossett)
Mattie was sure she had some Choctaw Indian blood and wanted to get
her daughter Gladys entered into the Chillocco Indian School. When
Mattie researched and found she was Creek Indian (and not Cherokee),
she stopped
the research and never registered for a number on the Indian Roll.
According to her death certificate, Mattie moved to Fresno County
California in 1948. This seems to coincide with her husband's death.
She probably moved to California after her husband's death to be with
her daughter Gladys.

Graveside services for James V. Markham, 89, will be at 1 p.m.
Friday at San Jacinto Valley Cemetery. Friends may call from noon
until 5 p.m. Thursday at Westley Funeral Home in San Jacinto. He
died Sunday at Hemet Valley Medical Center. The cause of death is
pending a doctor's report. Mr. Markham, who was born in Detroit,
Ala., lived in Hemet for 54 years. He was a member of the Laborer's
International Union for 22 years. He was a member of the Romoland
Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed watching baseball, gardening and
traveling. He was a Dodgers fan. He is survived by his wife, Irene;
three sons, Jimmy of Hemet, Robert of San Jacinto and Joe of Needles;
a daughter, Maxine Barrow of Vacaville; 16 grandchildren; 24
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters,
Ramie Byrd of Moreno Valley and Maxine Byrd of Sulligent, Ala.
