BENTLEY, VIRGIL TEMPLE, 85, distinguished minister, church leader, author, publisher, journalist, and gerontologist, passed away at
home on November 17, 2004. He was born to James Thomas Bentley and
Johnnie Anna (Green) Bentley in Kirkland, Texas, on April 19, 1919.
He was preceded in death by nine siblings. After graduating from
Damon High School in 1938, he attended Harding College in Searcy,
Arkansas, where he earned his B.A. in 1943. In the same year he
married Ann French. Virgil and Ann together served Churches of
Christ for sixty-five years in Humble and Fort Worth, TX; Cordell
and Oklahoma City, OK; Rockingham, NC; Flushing, NY; Arlington, VA;
and in Dallas for the last 37 years. He earned an M.L.A. from SMU
in 1970 and an M.A. in gerontology from the University of North
Texas in 1975. Virgil Bentley's career was distinguished and varied.
He always maintained a great interest in writing and enjoyed writing
articles and essays. He published several books, especially on
aging, and for many years he directed Temple Publishing Company.
Within Churches of Christ, he became a popular champion of the
elderly, constantly emphasizing the spiritual needs of older adults
and the need for the church to capitalize on the spiritual resources
of the elderly. He was widely honored for his positive outlook on
life and his gracious spirit towards all. In 1990, the Pruett
Gerontology Center of Abilene Christian University honored him for
his distinguished service in the field of gerontology. Virgil was
instrumental in the design, creation and on-going improvement of
Christian Care Centers. For several years he served as administrator
and then as the minister to the aged and elder at the Christian Care
Center, Mesquite. For many years he served as an elder of the
Highland Oaks Church of Christ. He also served on the Board of
Visitors of the gerontology program of Abilene Christian
University. "Papa" is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ann
Bentley; son, John David Bentley; a daughter, Anne Hathaway Tippens
and husband, Darryl; two grandsons, Jeff Tippens, Kyle Tippens and
wife Shannon; and great granddaughter Emily Tippens. A memorial
service will be held at Highland Oaks Church of Christ, 10805
Kingsley Road, Dallas at 1:30 PM on Saturday, November 20. Memorials
may be made to the Christian Care Center, Inc.,1000 Wiggins Parkway,
Mesquite, TX. 75150 or to the Virgil Bentley Gerontology Endowed

ALEXANDER WILLIAMS DISAPPEARS
Mr. James E. Williams, 1527 Hanover street, advertises to another
column for information of his father, Alexander Williams, aged
seventy years, who left his home December 28. The elder Mr. Williams
had spoken of going to see his son, William Williams, on Kent Island,
but recent letters show that he has not arrived there. He is a
ship carpenter by trade, but has not worked recently, his eyesight
being somewhat impaired.

ALEXANDER WILLIAMS DROWNED
The body of Alexander Williams, aged fifty-eight (sic 70+), of 1527
Hanover street, was found floating at the foot of Cross street yesterday,
by William Lightman. Mr. Williams had been missing from his home
since December 29, 1898. He was a carpenter and the father of
Patrolman John E. Lewis, of the southern district.

Evelyn Bartlett Knowles, 95, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Front
Royal, Va., and Roanoke, Va., passed away December 6, 2005 . Born in
Roanoke, Va., on December 2, 1910, to the late Joseph H. Bartlett and
Leona Nofsinger Bartlett, she was the wife of Arthur S. Knowles of
Franklin County, Va., for 50 years. She was a retired businesswoman
and homemaker. She was a member of the Marlow Heights Baptist Church
in Front Royal, Va., and attended Beachlawn Baptist Church in Virginia
Beach, Va. She was a 50 year member of Hillcrest Chapter Number 159,
O.E.S. in Roanoke, Va. She was an accomplished artist and an avid
traveler. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Knowles Kolb, and
son-in-law, H. Grady Kolb, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother,
Joseph Bartlett of Chesapeake, Va.; two granddaughters, Karen Lynn
Poff of Woodstock, Va., and Deborah Jean Perez-Lopez of
Christiansburg, Va., and their respective husbands, Robert D. Poff
and Dr. Mark S. Perez-Lopez; a great-granddaughter, Brooke Lea Poff
of Woodstock, Va.; and two great-grandsons, J. Daniel Shierling of
Crawfordville, Fla. and Brandon D. Poff of Woodstock, Va. She was
predeceased by her daughter, Peggy Ann Knowles and her husband,
Arthur S. Knowles. A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11
a.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Great Neck Chapel with the Rev.
Richard Yates officiating. A graveside service will be conducted
Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Va. The
family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to
8:30 p.m. and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. Contributions in lieu of
