Mrs. Helen Burrell Sheppard, 72, of 611 Pine st., died 12:15 a.m.
today at County Memorial hospital after an illness of six weeks.
She was born March 3, 1892, in Coshocton, a daughter of Thomas and
Alwilda Darling Burrell. In 1913 she was married to Earl A.
Sheppard, who died in 1959. A graduate of Coshocton high school
with the calss of 1910, she was a charter member of the Navy Mothers
club and served as its first president. Surviving are four
daughters, Mrs. Warren P. Gauthier of Cabridge, Mass., Mrs. Frank
A. Compola of Willowick, O., Mrs. V.R. Olden of Toppenish, Wash.,
and Mrs. Edward F. Gehrke of Merced, Calf., and two sons, Robert E.
and William E. Sheppard, both of Coshocton, and nine grandchildren.
Four sisters and three brothers are deceased. Services at the Dawson
funeral home will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. by Rev. M. Dean
Marson. Burial will follow in South Lawn cemetery. Friends may call
at the funeral home Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and until
time of services Thursday.

GREENSBORO- Leon Garber, Colonel, USMC Retired, passed away on
Thursday, July 20, 2006. A graveside service with full military
honors will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2006, 2 p.m. at Westminster
Gardens Cemetery. Leon was born Aug. 30, 1918 near Bridgewater, Va.
and was educated in the public schools of Bridgewater. Leon entered
Bridgewater College in 1938 where he participated in sports and other
college activities throughout his college years. As a senior, he was
president of the Senior Class, a member of the Student Council,
captain of the basketball and track teams, and recently he was the
first inductee into the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame.
After graduation, Leon entered the U.S. Marines and served in the
South Pacific. His main tour of duties included action on the New
Georgia Islands, Guam in the Mariana Islands, and Iwo Jima. Leon
also received the Silver Star Medal of heroism. Leon later
participated in the Korean Conflict and continued to remain active
in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He retired after 26 years of
active and reserve duty attaining the rank of colonel. After Leon
was separated from active service he was appointed to the U.S.
Probation Office in Roanoke, Va. He was transferred to Greensboro as
a supervisor. In 1961, he was appointed U.S. Chief Probation Officer
of the Middle District of North Carolina, retiring in 1977 after 25
years of service. Over the years, Leon had been a member of civic,
social, fraternal and business organizations. At the time of his
death, he was a member of the Military Officers Assoc. of America,
the Retired Federal Employees Assoc., and a life member of the Elks
Lodge 602. He is a Methodist by faith and has been a member of Christ
United Methodist Church in Greensboro since 1960. Leon was preceded
in death by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Hylton Garber. Surviving
are his children, daughter Cynthia G. Turnipseed of Spartanburg,
S.C.; sons, Dr. Jeffrey H. Garber of Kernersville and David L. Garber
of Charlotte. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to
Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave.,
Greensboro, NC 27405 or Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, VA 22812.
The family will receive friends following the services at the
graveside. Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel is assisting the Garber
family.
