CUSTODIAN OF THE DETENTION FOUND DEAD ON A COUCH.
Evident He Had Taken Medicine Just Before He Died But What It Was
is Not Learned-Coroner Finds Acute Alcoholism the Cause-Had Been Ill
All Winter-Wife Makes the Ghastly Discovery.
Carl Culp, sixty-five years old, custodian of the Detention Hospital,
two miles east of the city on the north side of the river, was found
dead on a couch on the first floor of the hospital at 2 o?clock
yesterday by his wife, who returned after being in the city shopping.
Nobody had been in the hospital during the afternoon and nobody was
there when Mr. Culp died. He had been ill all winter of heart
trouble and suffered great pain at times. He took medicine to quiet
the pain. Mrs. Culp was greatly shocked upon making the ghastly
discovery. She called Coroners Loop of Wellsburg and Turnbull of
Elmira. Dr. Turnbull said that it would be proper for Coroner Loop
to attend to the case and the coroner made his investigation
yesterday. Mr. Culp was feeling in his usual condition late this
morning when Mrs. Culp left the hospital to come to this city. It
is not known that anybody visited the hospital after she left.
When she returned she opened a door leading to the sitting room and
the first object that met her eyes was the body of her husband
stretched on a couch. It was apparent to her immediately that he
was dead. There was evidence that he had taken a dose of medicines
immediately before death. Carl Culp was well known in Elmira for
many years. He formerly was a city expressman here. Since the
establishment of the hospital several years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Culp
had been the custodians of the institution and had lived there.
During the past winter Mr. Culp's health had been poor and he had
been ill in the house most of the time. It is probable that he was
attempting to gain relief from such an attack of heart trouble today
when he died. Mr. Culp was a veteran of the Civil War and a member
of the 141 Regiment New York Volunteers. He was formerly a nurse by
profession and was a smallpox immune which made his services valuable
when the city had several cases a few years ago. Mr. Culp is
survived by his wife, a sister, Mrs. Mary C. Heath and a brother
John Culp, all of this city. The notice of the funeral will be
given later. The Coroner found that death was due to acute
alcoholism. (handwritten on article May 5, 1910)
DEATH DUE TO ALCOHOLISM FIND NO TRACE OF POISON
Drs. Colegrove and Lande, under the direction of County Coroner
Loop of Wellsburg, performed an autopsy yesterday afternoon upon
the remains of MacGee Carlton Culp, the custodian of the City
Detention Hospital, who was found dead in that place yesterday
afternoon. The autopsy was performed at the City Morgue and
developed the fact that the cause of death was acute alcoholism
and that there was no trace of poison as was first suspected.
The decedent was sixty-two years old and was a member of one of
the oldest families in the Chemung Valley. The remains were
removed to the Hubbell undertaking rooms and the funeral will be
announced later.
MACGEE CARLTON CULP
The funeral of MacGee Carlton Culp will be held Sunday at 2 p.m.
at the residence of Francis M. Lucas, 411 West Fourth Street.
Burial will be in the Second Street Cemetery.

Notes:
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The (GA) - November 22, 2002
Milton Berry forged a rewarding career as a pharmaceutical salesman,
financial planner and motivational speaker. The real fun in his life
didn't come until his retirement. Soon after he stopped working in
1983, he helped found the community theater group Trispro with his
wife, Barbara Berry, and her brother, Spenny Steenrod. It was a
different kind of company. "We were trying to appeal to people who
had never had the opportunity to appear on stage," said Mr. Berry in
a 1998 Atlanta Journal-Constitution article. The Berrys recruited
talent from the open-mike piano bars they liked to frequent. Many
Trispro performers qualified for AARP. "The average age of the
performers was probably 50," he said. The company specialized in
musical revues that revolved around famous songwriters or themes,
like the World War II-based "Reveille to Revelry." Mr. Steenrod
directed, Mrs. Berry sang, and Mr. Berry handled the business end.
"Milton was the foundation, the adhesive tape that made it work and
kept it going," said Minnie Tee, stage name of a Lilburn actress who
sang with the company, which disbanded in 1992. The funeral for Mr.
Berry, 83, of Sandy Springs, who died Tuesday of leukemia at Hospice
Atlanta, is 2 p.m. today at Sandy Springs Chapel. Mr. Berry moved to
Atlanta as a regional sales supervisor for Merck & Co. in 1957. In
1958, he resigned to become a financial planner. He was so good at
selling mutual funds that Fidelity Management Co. recruited him as
regional vice president of sales. In 1976, he left to become a sales
management trainer and motivational speaker. His charisma and sales
savvy came in handy when Mr. Berry began emceeing performances of his
singing friends at metro piano bars. "He was a fantastic emcee,"
said Bob Fountain of Atlanta, former Atlanta Braves organist who
played piano at many of those bars. "He was funny and informative,
and people loved him." For most of his life, Mr. Berry just listened
while his wife and friends sang. Around 1988, he surprised his wife
by joining her at the mike. For the rest of his life, Mr. Berry would
never miss a chance to sing in public. "He had a voice like Kermit
the Frog, pleasant to listen to but humorous," said Mr. Fountain. "He
had an interesting way of putting over a song." For "Old Bones," Mr.
Berry "came out in raincoat with his pants rolled up so you could
only see his bare legs and shoes," said Ms. Tee. "He almost looked
like a flasher. Milton had personality. He reminded me of George
Burns." Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Stroud of Tucker; a son,
Greg Berry of Marietta; and three grandchildren.
