AKERS, Calvin C., 83, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, February 2, 2000. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Alvin Ashby and Edna Naff Akers; also two brothers, Herman L. and Harry T. Akers. He was a veteran of World War II U.S. Army Coast Artillery Pacific Theater, a lifelong member of Belmont Baptist Church where he was very active with the Sunday School Department. He was a grocery buyer for over 50 years, 20 of which were with the Kroger Co. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen Mason Akers; one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin D. and Catherine B. Akers; one grandson, Andrew Mason Akers; two sisters, Mae A. Antel and Nancy A. Milam; three sisters-in-law, Ruby D. and Marion B. Akers and Ruth M. Slusser; one brother-in-law, James W. Slusser; a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel on Saturday, February 5, 2000 at 1 p.m. with Dr. Robert Wayne officiating. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel on Friday, February 4, 2000 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

Charles Weldon Akers, 94, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004. He was born to Dillard Akers and Sallie Akers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, P.D. Akers Jr.; and a sister, Eleanor Bowling; and a son, Lowell J. Akers. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Mildred Fralin Akers of Rocky Mount; two daughters, Janice Foster of Martinsville and Sylvia Wray of Rocky Mount; three sons, Charles Kenneth Akers of Rocky Mount, Jack Weldon Akers of Wirtz and Al K. Akers of Boones Mill; three sisters, Thelma A. Montgomery, Beatrice Akers, Ruby Prillaman; two brothers, John Herbert Akers and Edward C. Akers; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Flora Funeral Service chapel. The Revs. Melvin Harris, Brad Dulaney, Paul Stone, Pat Tony and Robert Williard will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 665 S. Main St., Rocky Mount. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Edward W. Akers of the Bonell Retirement Community died Sunday at Weld County General Hospital at the age of 89. He was a retired U.S. Post Office employe. Born July 29, 1881, at Snake Creek, Va., he married Lora F. Boyd at Macomb, Ill., on Christmas Day, 1907. They later moved to Kansas, and in 1918 took a homestead in the Briggsdale area. They moved to Greeley in 1920 and Akers worked for the postal service until he retired in 1959, Mrs. Akers died Feb 3, 1960. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of Denver. Survivors include three sons and one daughter, Dr. Howard J. Akers of Salem, Ore., Harold Akers and Herman E. Akers, both of Greeley and Mrs. R. L. (Fern) Dawson of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. H. D. Quesenberry of Winfield, Kan., Mrs. John Harmon of Floyd, Va., and Mrs. A. L. Hylton of Roanoke, Va. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Macy Allouitt Drawing Room. Interment will be in Linn Grove Cemetery.

Dr. Howard J. Akers, 63, assistant director of the University Extension Divison of Oregon State System of Higher Education and a division employe since 1948, died Monday at a Salem hospital. Services were held Thursday. Akers had held a series of positions in 24 years with the extension divison of the Oregon State System of Higher Education, and was active in civic and professional work. He had served as a field representative in the department of statewide classes, head of the office of correspondence study for the state, coordinator of the liberal arts program and originator of the contemporary lecture series. Akers was graduated from Colorado State University and the University of Oregon. He had published several articles and textbooks. He was a member of both the National University Extension Association and Rotary Club. In 1967 and 1968 he managed the Oregon Job Fair. Surviving are his wife, Ellen; two sons, Charles Akers of Buffalo, N.Y., and Keith Akers of Eugene, Ore.; two brothers, Harold and Herman Akers, both of Greeley, and a sister, Mrs. Fern Dawson of Tucson, Ariz. The family suggests contributions to the Akers Scholarship Fund of the Rotary Club.

AKERS, Herman Lee, 81, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 16, 1996. He was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church. Mr. Akers began a long railroad career with the Virginian Railway, and went on to work with the Norfolk & Western Railway, retiring in 1976, with 40 years of service. He spent most of his railroad career as a locomotive engineer. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Dixon Akers; a son and daughter-in-law, David Lee and Shelly Akers, Parker, Colo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane A. and Robert Tibbs, War, W.Va.; five grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Calvin and Helen Akers, Roanoke, Harry T. and Marian Akers, Monroeville, Pa.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mae and Bob Antel, Salem, Nancy Milam, Roanoke; a number of nieces and nephews including a special niece, Eloise Turnbull Garland of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Dr. Daniel E. Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, where the family will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

AKERS, Irene Frances, 93, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2000. She was a daughter of the late David C. Akers and Senia Hollingsworth Akers, and predeceased by her brothers, Walter, Raymond, Ralph, and Paul Akers. Miss Akers was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was retired from the American Viscose. Surviving are her sisters-in-law, Evelyn Akers and Pauline Akers; a stepsister, Margaret Watts; a stepbrother, Steve Jones; two nieces, Elaine Arnold and her husband Victor, and Sandra Parrish; and a nephew, Raymond D. Akers, Jr. and his wife Barbara. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 2, 2000 in Sherwood Memorial Park. Pastor John Furman and the Rev. Otis L. Burgher will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's North Chapel.

She was on the Board of Directors of Greenvale Nursery School; a volunteer for the Roanoke City Public Library and the Roanoke Historical Society. She was a former teacher with the Roanoke City Public School System. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Jim Thomassen, Austin, Texas.

Mrs. Lora F. Akers, 71, of 1024 Cranford, died at Weld County General hospital Wednesday morning. She had been in poor health for the past six months. Mrs. Akers was born Aug. 13, 1888, at Tennessee, Ill. Edward W. Akers and the former Lora F. Boyd, were married in Macomb, Ill., on Dec, 25, 1907. They moved to Winfield, Kan., in 1908 and from there to Briggsdale in April, 1918. They homesteaded near Briggsdale until 1920 when Akers started work at the Greeley post office. He remained in the postal service for 31 years until his retirement in August, 1951. The Akerses have lived in their home on Cranford since 1928. Mrs. Akers was a member of the First Christian church and Circle 5 of the Christian's Women's Fellowship. Besides her husband, Mrs. Akers is survived by four children, Harold V. and Herman E. Akers, both of Greeley, Dr. Howard J. Akers of Salem, Ore., and Mrs. Robert L. Dawson of Tucson, Ariz.; also six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning from Macys drawing room with interment at Linn Grove cemetery.

He was a very loved and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Ted Biby, 90, of Winfield, died Jan. 12, 2007, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church. Cremation and private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Memorials have been established for Grace United Methodist Church and for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Born on Sept. 27, 1916, in Udall, Ted was the only child of Reuel and Jess (Davis) Biby. He was raised in Udall and graduated from Udall High School. He then attended Pittsburg State University. Ted married Lois Akers on July 20, 1944, in Winfield at the Grace United Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Winfield. Ted was in the United States Army Airforce for 44 months. A veteran of World War II, he spent most of his time in the South Pacific in New Guinea and Australia. He was honorably discharged in September 1945. He worked as a carpenter for himself as well as for contractors. In 1967, he went to work at the Winfield State Hospital & Training Center doing carpentry and maintenance. He retired in 1981. As a member of Grace United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, he served on the board of trustees and various committees and was an active member of the Covenant Sunday school class and United Methodist Men. He was also a member of the local American Legion, the Carpenters Union, the K&O Steam and Gas Engine Association, Land Owners Association, Farm Bureau, the Bee Keepers Club and PTA, and he was a 4-H leader. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, gardening, and spending time with his family. In earlier years, he loved coaching youth baseball and basketball teams. Ted was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Lois Biby, Winfield; his sons, Roger Biby, and wife, Debbie, and Parke Biby, and wife, Carol, all of Winfield; his daughter, Carol Myers, and husband, Bill, Wichita, and Lela Boyer, and husband, Robert, Durango, Colo.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a member of Yadkin VFW Post 10346 in Yadkinville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Bently Cassell. Survivors include daughters Alice Cassell Mann and Martha Cassell, both of Blythewood; sisters Hassie Turner and Betty Jo Farris, both of Hillsville, Va., and Lucille Edwards, Dublin, Va.; six grandsons; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. DAWSON, Robert Leroy, age 88, joined his beloved wife of 63 years, Fern on June 30, 2006. Service to be held at Catalina Methodist Church on Thursday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m. Born February 19, 1918, he served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He taught school from 1940 -1981. During retirement he continued his commitment to community service to become the longest serving volunteer at the Food Bank. He was a member of Catalina Methodist Church, the Homebuilder's class, and Pima County Retired Teacher's Association. He is survived by daughters, Alice and Ann; grandchildren, Spring, Kelly, Kendy and Tommy and great-grandchildren, Elaina, Connor, Dawson, Kaitlynn and Ryker. Carl V. DeHart, 87, of Danville, died Friday, December 19, 2003, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home where he had been a resident since March 2002. He was born October 7, 1916 in Meadows of Dan and was a son of the late Daniel Conner DeHart and Annie Alderman DeHart. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Clarice Soyars DeHart; five sisters, Ethel D. Fisher, Grace D. Eanes, Mae D. Snead, Vadie D. Frazier and Edna D. Bailey; and a brother, Benjamin DeHart. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II on the U.S.S. Tacloban Patrol Gunner 22 in the Philippines and Okinawa. He received the Asiatic-Pacific American Theater Service Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and as the superintendent of Sunday schools. He had perfect attendance at Sunday school for 39 years. He retired in 1981 as co-owner and operator of DeHart Brothers Lumber Company. Surviving are his wife, Nan Eva DeHart of the home; one son, Danny DeHart of Danville; one daughter, Linda D. King of Fredricksburg; one sister, Violet D. Holley of Danville; two brothers, G.D. DeHart and Esley "Pete" DeHart, both of Danville; four grandchildren and two great-grandsons. The funeral was conducted Sunday at Sharon Baptist Church by the Rev. Allen Holder. Burial, with military honors by American Legion Post #325, was in Danville Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association (Central and Western Virginia), 2728 Colonial Ave., SW, Suite 2, Roanoke, Va. 24015. The retired sales representative for Onida Heating Co. of New York died unexpectedly Saturday at his home. He had been in declining health for a year. He was born in Pittsylvania County April 27, 1908, a son of the late Alonza H. and Dora Atkinson Eanes. He was a member of Motega Tribe of Red Men. Oddfellows No. 343 and the Rebekahs. Surviving are his wife, Grace DeHart Eanes, three sons, Vernon Eanes of Salisbury, N. C., Gordon Eanes of Atlanta, Ga., and Preston Eanes of Charlotte. N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Pearl Gore of Whiteville, N.C., two brothers, James Stuart Eanes of Corpus Christi, Tex., and Calvin Eanes of Rockingham, N.C.; and six grandchildren. He was born August 25, 1918 in McCune, Kansas, to William Alexander and Mattie (House) Flaharty. He grew up and attended school in McCune. He farmed his entire life on a farm north of McCune. He and Bernice Stewart were married January 18, 1940. She preceded him in death March 10, 1979. He and Helen E. (Knowles) Smith were married December 22, 1979 in McCune. She survives of the home. He enjoyed gardening, mowing the lawn and tractor pulling events. He was a member of the McCune United Methodist Church and Lions Club. Through the years he served as director of McCune Coop for 12 years and had also served on the Osage Township Board and Farmers Home Administration Board at Girard. Survivors include one son, Calvin Flaharty and his wife, Betty, rural McCune; one daughter, Patricia A. Holroyd and her husband, Dick, Parsons; three stepsons, Joseph Smith and his wife, Beverly, Independence, KS; Robert Smith and his wife, Shirley, Jericho, VT; Mark Smith and his wife, Alice, Olathe, KS; four grandchildren, Brian Flaharty and his wife, DeNene; Rebecca Holroyd, Jana Dimond and her husband, Jack; Megan Holroyd; two great-grandchildren, Kalyn Flaharty & Breann Flaharty; seven step-gandchildren, Russ Smith, Gina McLenon, Beth Capps, David Smith, Jessica Smith, Amanda Smith & Max Smith; eight step-great-grandchildren, Shelby Smith, Abby Smith, A. The Rev. Paul D. Martin Jr., a retired pastor and official with the Virginia United Methodist Homes, died yesterday in Richmond. He was 75. Mr. Martin retired from Virginia United Methodist Homes in 1985, after serving for a year as project director. From 1973 to 1984, he worked as executive vice-president of Virginia United Methodist Homes. Before that, he was a district superintendent of the Winchester and Richmond districts of the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He had also been a pastor in several Virginia cities, including Richmond, Danville, Alexandria and Roanoke. Originally from Roanoke, Mr. Martin received his bachelor's degree from Roanoke College. He served as chairman of the board of trustees of Randolph- Macon Academy for 10 years before becoming chairman emeritus in February. He also served as chairman of the United Methodist Church's General Board of Health and Welfare Ministries and was a member of several other boards. Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Virginia Akers Martin; three daughters; Suzanne M. Boltz of Alexandria, Rebecca M. Moseley of Burke, and Sarah M. Whitmore of Martinsville; and two sisters, Jane M. Farrand and Thelma M. Vest, both of Roanoke.Roanoke. Virginia Akers Martin, 91, departed this life on February 25, 2008, in the Goodwin House Baileys Crossroads Retirement Home in Falls Church, Va. Born June 29, 1916, in Callaway, Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert Everett Akers and Sarah Bryant Akers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Paul D. Martin Jr.; by her brothers, Edward Akers and Roy Akers; and her sisters, Eva A. Amos and Katherine A. Webb. She was a loving mother, wife and homemaker. She was devoted to service as a pastors wife. She was a member of Fairlington United Methodist Church and a long-time member of the United Methodist Women. She attended Ferrum Junior College until she was called to nurse her mother through an illness. She taught piano lessons for several years and attended Washington University in St. Louis for two summers to increase her musical skills. She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Sarah M. Whitmore and Winston Whitmore, of Martinsville, Va., Suzanne M. Boltz and David Boltz, of Alexandria, Va., and Rebecca M. Moseley and James Moseley, of Ashburn, Va. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Charles M. Whitmore and Theary Seng, of Burke, Va., Brian L. Whitmore and his wife, Tabitha, of Stokesdale, N.C., Andrea S. Boltz, of Greenville, S.C., Jason M. Moseley, of Herndon, Va., Lewis M. Boltz, of Hoover, Ala., and Benjamin D. Moseley, of Dale City, Va. Funeral visitation will be held on February 28, 2008, at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, Va., from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. On March 1, 2008, a visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Oakeys Funeral Home, South Chapel, Roanoke, Va., with a service at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. He was a retired salesman with Ralston Purina and also a member of Pigg River Primitive Baptist Church in Franklin County, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Akers Plunkett; two brothers, Dunnington Plunkett and George H. Plunkett, Jr.; one infant sister; his stepmother, Katherine J. Martin Plunkett; two stepsisters, Mary Martin and Myrtle Doss. Surviving are one daughter, Carol Sue Goodwin; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Norma Plunkett, Grover and Barbara Plunkett, Jerry and Tricia Plunkett, all of Roanoke; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one stepbrother, C.A. (Neal) Martin and his wife, Vivian J. Martin of Boones Mill. Several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and other relatives survive. Funeral services will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Oakey's South Chapel with Elder W. Lane Carter and Elder Junior L. Conner officiating. Ruby Akers Prillaman, 90, of Vinton, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 30, 2008. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was a member of Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Vinton, a longtime professional candy maker at Old Dominion Candy Co. for 33 years, and also worked for 11 years for food services for Roanoke County Schools and Herman L. Horn Elementary School. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Sally Akers; brothers, P. D. Akers, Jr. and Weldon Akers; and sisters, Thelma Montgomery and Eleanor Bowling. Surviving Mrs. Prillaman is her devoted husband of 69 years, Thomas Prillaman; her son, Alfred Prillaman and his wife, Nancy; her daughter, Rita Vaught; three grandchildren, Brian Prillaman and his wife, Nicole, Pamela Vaught and Melissa Vaught Okes and her husband, Andrew; her brothers, Herbert Akers and E. C. Akers; sisters, Beatrice Akers and Merle Prillaman; a devoted caregiver, Gloria Welch; a special niece, Doris Clark and her husband, Gerald; and a number of other nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Andrew S. Good officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Mr. Prillaman was a member of Southview United Methodist Church, an Army veteran of World War II and a graduate of National Business College. Surviving are his devoted wife of sixty-two years, Merle A. Prillaman; a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Linda Prillaman of Troutville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin P. and Robert L. Dix of Daleville, Anita and Richard Sheetz of Roanoke; eight grandchildren, Thomas and Brian Hurt, Lesley and Tracy Prillaman, Mitch and Amanda Sheetz, Matthew and Jeremy Graybill; and four great-grandchildren. 7, 2001, at Cumbernauld Village. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. A memorial has been established with Southwestern College. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Quesenberry was born Jan. 11, 1907, in Yoder, to Ollie (Coover) and Charles Haines. She graduated from Haven High School in 1925. She attended Emporia State Teachers College and graduated from Southwestern College in 1929 with a degree in home economics. On July 9, 1936, she married Dillon C. Quesenberry. They made their first home in Wichita, then moved to Winfield where they ran a grocery store. During World War II, while her husband was away, Quesenberry continued to work at the store. After her husband's death in 1956, Quesenberry worked for Trees Oil Co. as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 1987. She moved to Cumbernauld Village in 1996. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was active in a ladies' group; a 60-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of Business and Professional Women. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Archambeau, Winfield; a sister, Marjorie Bryan, Urbana, Ill.; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
