BERRY, Barbara (Steenrod) (Cunningham): 14 Jun 1917 - 13 Dec 1998
Source: online newspaper posting
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Antlanta, Georgia, December 17, 1998
Barbara S. Berry, 81, founded Atlanta stage group to pursue dream of singing
Barbara Steenrod Berry sang at her father's opera house as a child, then put her dreams of stardom aside. When the Sandy Springs resident stepped on stage 60 years later, her voice wasn't as strong, but the spotlight was just as bright. Mrs. Berry, 81, helped found an amateur theater group for lifelong dreamers like herself. For nine years, Triple S. Productions staged dozens of musicals in Atlanta. At least 176 people appeared on stage in holiday shows, classics such as "Fiddler on the Roof" and original works. "I would say the average age of the performers was probably 50," said Mrs. Berry's husband, Milton O. Berry. "We were trying to appeal to people who had never had the opportunity to appear on stage. That's what we were hunting for." The funeral for Mrs. Berry, who died of renal failure Sunday at her residence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Directors. Known for her love of stylish hats, Mrs. Berry grew up in Nelsonville, Ohio, and started singing at her father's opera house at age 5. She married and had two children, her husband said, but never stopped dreaming of the stage. While her friends enjoyed going to nightclubs or restaurants, Mrs. Berry frequented piano bars where the public had a chance to sing. "Wherever I took her, that's the first thing we would look for and she would do it," her husband said. In 1983, at 66, Mrs. Berry found a way to make her lifelong dream and that of other amateur performers finally come true. Along with her brother, the late Spencer Steenrod, and her husband, she founded Triple S. Productions, nicknamed Trispro. "You could tell she loved everything she was doing," said Sandy Streicher of Lawrenceville, who played piano for the group. "When the music started and she started to sing, she was a completely different person." Trispro attracted an older crowd, fond of the music of the '40s and '50s, and attendance was much greater than expected, Mr. Berry said. After the final show in 1992, the group had $10,000 left over and established a scholarship for performing arts students at Georgia State University. Survivors other than her husband include a daughter, Lynn Williams of Tucker; a son, Greg O. Berry of Marietta; a sister, Roberta Lynn Steenrod Adler of Nelsonville; and three grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that contributions be made to the Trispro Scholarship Fund, Georgia State University, University Plaza, Atlanta, GA 30303.

BERRY, Milton O: 26 Dec 1918 - 19 Nov 2002
Source: online newspaper posting
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The (GA) - November 22, 2002
Milton Berry forged a rewarding career as a pharmaceutical salesman, financial planner and motivational speaker. The real fun in his life didn't come until his retirement. Soon after he stopped working in 1983, he helped found the community theater group Trispro with his wife, Barbara Berry, and her brother, Spenny Steenrod. It was a different kind of company. "We were trying to appeal to people who had never had the opportunity to appear on stage," said Mr. Berry in a 1998 Atlanta Journal-Constitution article. The Berrys recruited talent from the open-mike piano bars they liked to frequent. Many Trispro performers qualified for AARP. "The average age of the performers was probably 50," he said. The company specialized in musical revues that revolved around famous songwriters or themes, like the World War II-based "Reveille to Revelry." Mr. Steenrod directed, Mrs. Berry sang, and Mr. Berry handled the business end. "Milton was the foundation, the adhesive tape that made it work and kept it going," said Minnie Tee, stage name of a Lilburn actress who sang with the company, which disbanded in 1992. The funeral for Mr. Berry, 83, of Sandy Springs, who died Tuesday of leukemia at Hospice Atlanta, is 2 p.m. today at Sandy Springs Chapel. Mr. Berry moved to Atlanta as a regional sales supervisor for Merck & Co. in 1957. In 1958, he resigned to become a financial planner. He was so good at selling mutual funds that Fidelity Management Co. recruited him as regional vice president of sales. In 1976, he left to become a sales management trainer and motivational speaker. His charisma and sales savvy came in handy when Mr. Berry began emceeing performances of his singing friends at metro piano bars. "He was a fantastic emcee," said Bob Fountain of Atlanta, former Atlanta Braves organist who played piano at many of those bars. "He was funny and informative, and people loved him." For most of his life, Mr. Berry just listened while his wife and friends sang. Around 1988, he surprised his wife by joining her at the mike. For the rest of his life, Mr. Berry would never miss a chance to sing in public. "He had a voice like Kermit the Frog, pleasant to listen to but humorous," said Mr. Fountain. "He had an interesting way of putting over a song." For "Old Bones," Mr. Berry "came out in raincoat with his pants rolled up so you could only see his bare legs and shoes," said Ms. Tee. "He almost looked like a flasher. Milton had personality. He reminded me of George Burns." Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Stroud of Tucker; a son, Greg Berry of Marietta; and three grandchildren.
