STEVENS, Martha Letitia (Longley): 5 Jan 1923 - 13 Sep 2003
Source: online newspaper posting
Abilene Reporter-News, Abilene, Texas, September 14, 2003
Letitia Stevens, known as Tish in local and regional art circles, died on September 13, 2003, in an Abilene hospital. She was born in Batesville, Arkansas, on January 5, 1923, to N.A. and Ruth Longley. After attending public schools in Batesville, she enrolled in Harding College, Searcy, Arkansas, where she met and fell in love with fellow student William Clark Stevens. After graduation, she taught in Arkansas public schools, and Clark served in the U.S. military during World War II. They were married in Hot Springs, Arkansas in January 1944. At the war's end, her teaching helped make it possible for her husband to earn his Ph.D. in Biology from Vanderbilt University. Upon achieving this goal, they moved to Searcy where he taught at Harding University for 18 years. During these years, two daughters, Diane and Patti Lu, were born to them, making their family complete. In 1967, the family moved to Abilene, where Clark served as head of the biology department of Abilene Christian University. During this time, Letitia enjoyed discovering and developing her artistic abilities and acquiring a large circle of friends in the artistic communities in and around Abilene. She was a member and officer of National League of American Pen Women and Creative Arts Club, both of which she enjoyed thoroughly. Many of her beautiful paintings received blue ribbon awards in various exhibitions. The paintings she gave to members of her family are indeed cherished. She was preceded in death in 2000 by the love of her life, her devoted husband of 56 years, Clark Stevens. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane Wilson and husband Jerry of Abilene and Patti Concepcion and husband Tomas of San Juan, Puerto Rico; three grandsons, Greg Wilson and wife Elizabeth of Dallas, Jimmy Wilson and wife Seanne of Harlingen, and Benjamin Mullings of Scottsdale, Arizona; two granddaughters, Camille Joyner and husband Stacy of Deltona, Florida, and Tammy Aponte and husband Albert of Richmond, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Haley and Alexandra Joyner and Jonathon Aponte; one sister, Sarah McAuley of Garland; and one brother, Bill Longley of Festus, Missouri. Letitia was warmhearted and loving and beloved by her family and friends. The funeral service is scheduled for Monday afternoon, September 15, at 1:30 in the chapel of University Church of Christ with Dr. Eddie Sharp officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home. Family visitation is set for 3:00 to 5:00 Sunday afternoon in the living room of Hillcrest Church of Christ. Those wishing to make memorial donations may choose Hendrick Hospice Care or the Clark Stevens Endowed Scholarship at ACU.

STEVENS, William Clark: 24 Mar 1921 - 22 Jul 2000
Source: online posting
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~txnavarr/obituaries/pg90012.htm
Dr. W. C. (Clark) Stevens, 79, retired professor of microbiology at Abilene Christian University, and for eighteen years head of the Department of Biology, died in an Abilene hospital on Saturday evening, July 22, 2000. He was born in Richland, Navarro County, Texas, on March 21, 1921. The funeral service is scheduled for 1:30 on Wednesday afternoon, July 26, in the auditorium of the University Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elmwood Funeral home. Family visitation is set for 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon in the Activity Center of the University Church. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Letitia (Longley), known favorably in local and regional art circles as 'Tish.' Theirs was a marriage made in heaven. When he breathed his last breath last Saturday evening, she was holding his hand. She gave him a last kiss. He is also survived by two daughters, Diane (Mrs. Jerry) Wilson of Abilene, and by Patti (Mrs. Tomas) Concepcion of San Juan, Puerto Rico. He leaves five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Clark is also survived by a sister, Vern Lansford, of Cleburne, Texas, and by a brother, John C. Stevens, of Abilene. Dr. Stevens' interests leaned toward science, specifically microbiology. He earned the bachelor's degree from Harding University, the masters' degree from the University of Arkansas, and the Ph.D from Vanderbilt University. His education was temporarily interrupted by WWII during which he served in the Army Air Corps. He taught at Harding University for several years with time out for post-doctoral studies at the University of Miami. In 1966 he moved to Abilene to become head of the Biology Department at ACU. The following citation was read on the occasion of his being awarded the 20-year pin recognizing his services to ACU (May, 1987). Dr. Clark Stevens has been a role model for many years for those who are younger. He has devoted his entire working life to Christian education and more importantly, he has developed that extra measure of Christian maturity that we respect and admire. We have never seen him impatient with anyone or any situation. He has been willing to take whatever time was needed for students and fellow faculty members. His students have consistently given him the highest ratings as a teacher, and many have complimented him by following him into the professional world as microbiologists. His peers have appreciated his quiet leadership, his kind and tactful manner, his example as a teacher, and his applied Christianity. On the occasion of his retirement in 1988, ACU announced the establishment of The Dr. William Clark Stevens Endowed Professorship and Research Laboratory. Also established was the Clark Stevens Endowed Scholarship. Those wishing to make memorial donations may choose one of these funds at ACU or a charity of choice. Speaking at the Service will be Dr. Eddie Sharp, minister of the University Church, with the scripture reading by Paul Rotenberry and the prayer by John Clark Stevens. Congregational singing will be led by Dr. Mark Tate. Pallbearers will be Greg Wilson, Jimmy Wilson, John Clark Stevens, James Cole, Brent Ballard and Paul Rotenberry. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the biology faculty and members of the Key City Kiwanis Club.
