Edward Rowe, aged 40, was instantly killed and Nimrod Savage, 20, was fatally injured about 4 o'clock Friday afternoon when a section of the roof of Opie Mine, No 6, situated near Milligan's Bend and McLuney in Perry county, and owned by the Zanesville Coal Co., fell, entrapping the men beneath it. The two men had shot their last coal for the day and were loading their last car. Other men employed in the mine had started for the surface a few minutes before and knew nothing of the accident. It was stated last night that Clinton Savage, father of one of the victims, that the roof of the mine had been somewhat loose for the past two or three days. As no one saw the accident, the exact method of its occurrence is not known. It is thought that the fall of slate was caused by the blast fired a short time before the accident occurred. The first knowledge of the fatal accident came about 5 o'clock when the driver of the mine came upon the men, almost completely buried by the slate, as he came into the mine to get the last cars of caol. He managed to extricate the victims and brought them to the surface of the ground. Cannon & Cannon's ambulance of Crooksville was summoned. It was discovered that Rowe was dead and that Savage was badly injured. The latter was rushed to the Bethesda hospital where he was given all possible attention, but passed away at 8:20 o'clock Friday night. Both men were badly crushed in the accident. Rowe's death is believed to have been due to a fractured skull and internal injuries. Savage was suffering from several broken ribs, a fractured left thigh, internal hemorrhages and injuries about the head. Rowe was removed to his home at Milligan's Bend, where he was prepared for burial. He is survived by his widow and seven children, all of the home. No funeral arrangements have been made. Savage was removed to the Bateman & Mangold morgue in this city where the body was prepared for burial. The remains later were removed to the home in Milligan's Bend by Cannon & Cannon of Crooksville. No funeral arrangements have been made. Young Savage is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Savage, and four sisters, Emma, Lydia, Mary and Rosie, all of the home near Milligan's Bend. Both men were well and favorably known and their deaths come as a shock to the community in which they lived.
