Possible Members of Indian Creek Baptist Church (1857-1866)

Possible Members of Indian Creek Baptist Church
Smith County, Texas

INDIAN CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH
(18571866) reported having 45 members at its peak in 1861; however, the names of less than one-third are known.  Because the church was established primarily by a few families related to each other by marriage (ADAMS, GAMMON, and PRICE), it seems reasonable to suggest that other members of these families also would have joined the church.  Possible members of Indian Creek Baptist Church include:

ADAMS, Andrew Jackson ~ son of Edwin and Martha Adams, charter members of Indian Creek.  With his mother, he was a charter member of what is now New Harmony Baptist Church in 1867.  Buried in Austin, Travis County, Texas.

ADAMS, Jeremiah J. ~ son of Edwin and Martha Adams, charter members of Indian Creek.  He lived near Indian Creek church and was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church in the 1870s.  Buried at Beaird Cemetery.

ADAMS, Sarah Elizabeth SWINNEY ~ wife of Jeremiah J. Adams.  Buried at Beaird Cemetery.

BARRON, Elizabeth Ann ADAMS ~ wife of John Wood Barron and a daughter of Edwin and Martha Adams, all members of Indian Creek.  Buried at New Harmony Cemetery.

BEAIRD, Mary Ann ADAMS ~ wife of Benjamin Bryant Beaird and a daughter of Jeremiah and Sarah Swinney Adams.  With her grandmother, she was a charter member of New Harmony Baptist Church in 1867.  Buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler.

ELLIS, Frances SIMMONS ~ wife of George M. Ellis and mother of Henry Thomas Ellis, charter member of Indian Creek.  Burial location unknown.

ELLIS, Martha Ann GAMMON ~ wife of Willis Jarrell Ellis and a daughter of Silas and Sarah Smith Gammon, charter members of Indian Creek.  Buried probably at Beaird Cemetery.

ELLIS, Mary Jane ADAMS ~ wife of Henry Thomas Ellis and a daughter of Edwin and Martha Adams, all charter members of Indian Creek.  With her sister, Sarah Adams Price, she was a charter member of Dean Baptist Church in 1872.  Buried at Beaird Cemetery.

ELLIS, Willis Jarrell ~ brother of Henry Thomas Ellis and son-in-law of Silas and Sarah Smith Gammon, all charter members of Indian Creek.  Buried at Beaird Cemetery.

GAMMON, Elizabeth SPLAWN ~ wife of Smith M. Gammon.  Possibly removed to Nacogdoches County, Texas.

GAMMON, Serena ~ daughter of Silas and Sarah Smith Gammon, charter members of Indian Creek.  Married relatively late in life to William H. Brittain.  Removed to the Indian Territory.

GAMMON, Smith M. ~ son of Silas and Sarah Smith Gammon, charter members of Indian Creek.  Burial location unknown.

LEWIS, Lourania PRICE ~ wife of James Jefferson Lewis and a sister of Salena Price White, John M. Price and Nancy Price Clay, all members of Indian Creek.  Burial location unknown.

PRICE, Alsista AUTREY ~ wife of S.R. Price.  Removed to Henderson County, Texas.

PRICE, Christiana Jane VENABLE ~ wife of Madison Freeman Price.  With her sister-in-law, Sarah Adams Price, she was a charter member of Dean Baptist Church in 1872.  Buried at Dean Baptist Cemetery.

PRICE, George J. ~ brother of Salena Price White, John M. Price and Nancy Price Clay and son-in-law of Silas and Sarah Smith Gammon, all members of Indian Creek.  Died in Civil War.

PRICE, Madison Freeman ~ brother of Salena Price White, John M. Price, and Nancy Price Clay, all members of Indian Creek.  Died apparently in Civil War.  Freeman Price's numerous letters to his wife while he was in the Confederate army suggest that he was reared in a devoutly Christian home.  In a letter dated 07 Jan 1863, he wrote, "I pray god's blessing upon you all.  I trust and pray that god will shield you from all harm and danger and pray god that we may all meet again one time more in this world."  Freeman then professed a "heep [sic] of confidence" in the "brethren of Indian Creek Church."

PRICE, Minerva A. GAMMON ~ wife of George J. Price and a daughter of Silas and Sarah Smith Gammon, charter members of Indian Creek.  Removed to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).

PRICE, Nancy Margaret SCOTT ~ wife of William Washington Price.  Buried at Beaird Cemetery.

PRICE, Sarah Ann ADAMS ~ wife of John M. Price and daughter of Edwin and Martha Adams, all members of Indian Creek.  With her sister and sister-in-law, Mary Jane Adams Ellis and Christiana Jane Venable Price, she was a charter member of Dean Baptist Church in 1872.  Buried at Dean Baptist Cemetery.

PRICE, Starling Ruffin (S.R.) ~ gave property for the church in 1858 and was the father of several known members.  Removed to Henderson County, Texas.

PRICE, William Washington ~ brother of Salena Price White, John M. Price, and Nancy Price Clay, all members of Indian Creek.  His grave is among the earliest burials at what is now Beaird Cemetery but may have been the cemetery for Indian Creek [see Indian Creek Baptist Church].

REEVES, Mary ~ wife of John B. Reeves, charter member of Indian Creek.  Removed to Van Zandt County, Texas.

VENABLE, Sarah A. PRICE ~ wife of Hugh Venable and a sister of Salena Price White, John M. Price, and Nancy Price Clay, all members of Indian Creek.  Removed to Henderson County, Texas.
