116. George Washington Jr Hawkins
Letter from George W. Hawkins (Father) to Leander M. Hawkins (Son) November 1, 1871. George would have been nearly 70 years old (depending on accuracy of birth date). One of his concerns was where he should live during the coming year -- the son he was living with (Giles) was going to move and George wanted to travel amongst his children. No envelope; no postmark.
Looks like the first word is Frederick, dated Nov 1, 1871
Dear Leander,
I thought I would try and write a few lines to you today it being a very rainy day to [day]. I know that I am in the land of the living yet....
[Text difficult to read and omitted here.]
... we are in the best circumstances to live that we have been in since we came down here. ... we have ..... a little over four hundred bushels of ears of corn this year and thirty one bushels of wheat and some where about forty or fifty bushels potatoes and we have two good hogs that will .... now about three hundred pounds and two good cows once the same horses that I drove down here our little Peach ..... very full this year but they about half rotted on the trees. We sold a little over forty five dollars worth of peaches this season now. Leander I want you to write as soon as you receive this and let me know what to do. This from your father
G. W. Hawkins
From book History of Erie County, Illustrated -- 1884 -- Chicago: Warner Beers & Co, page 793 and onward...:
...the territory now embraced in Washington Township, together withportions of Waterford and Franklin since taken off, was given thetitle of Conneauttee, after its lake and principal streams. The namewas changed to Washington in 1834.... In 1844, a large slice was cutout of the west side in the formation of Franklin Township....
It appears, from this history, that Erie was settled about 1797. The history lists the earliest settlers and the lay of the land. It goes on to say:
... 1834, J. J. Compton, Benjamin White, Jesse Tarbell, Wanton Slocum, the Hawkinses and M. M. McLaughrey ... [settled in the area.]
