Smardus-Snell-1809

Smardus Snell, born 1809

A short biography of Smardus Snell, born 1809, Lucy Phillips, his wife, and his family.

Smardus Snell

Biographical material has been gathered from many sources. I found many different spellings of the name 'Smardus' but this one was used the most so I will use it throughout. Besides that, one entry that I found had him listed as "Smartest" Snell, so that gave me an idea of the pronunciation of his name that they used then.

Some sheets show Cyrus with middle name of Phillips. I have not found any records written this way, except on the Alden Kindred website and they do not state where the information was found.

There is another person, Cyrus Phillips, later in the descendants of William Snell. (11/11/05)

A Snell family history, author unknown.

I found this in my genealogy stuff from Heber C. Snell that he gave me years before he died in 1974.

SMARDUS (also spelled Smyrdus 1780-1814, also 'Smartest' etc. but correct spelling is Smardus) married a girl from Bridgewater. Lucy Phillips and Smardus were married 18 Oct 1807 and made their home in Eaton, Carroll, New Hampshire. A son, Nathan, was born to them 30 Aug 1808 and another son, Cyrus, was born 7 Nov 1809. Smardus died when his youngest son was only three and a half years old and the widow, about two years subsequently, married Joshua Nickerson, a Baptist preacher.

In consequence of the severity of the stepfather, the two Snell boys were compelled, when about 10 and 12 yrs old to leave home. Nathan went to reside with his Grandfather, William Snell born in 1740. Cyrus went to live with Mr. Mark Blaisdell of Tamworth, New Hampshire, with whom he made his home during the winter seasons and elsewhere in the summer seasons.

Smardus died 25 Apr 1813.He is buried in the "Old Public" cemetery in Madison, New Hampshire in Row 2. I have a copy of his probate with Joshua Nickerson as Administrator. Joshua Nickerson married Lucy Phillips Snell before the probate was entirely finished. They had 3 children.

Film #16,374, Family History Library in Salt Lake City: Land Deed Grantors A-Z, lots of William and William Jr records of buying and selling land, one of these was to Smardus. Alden and Eleazer were usually witnesses to William and William Jr. and their land deed changes.

Also lots of entries for Joshua Nickerson, his first marriage and his 2nd to Lucy Snell and their first child.
