Fate (William Henry Harrison Fate) of Richland, South Dakota was Early Day Indian Fighter and for Many Years President of O.S.A. W.H.H. Fate, one of the very early pioneers of Union county, South Dakota, passed away at his home near Richland last Thursday morning, October 15, 1925, after a several weeks illness, from paralysis of the stomach and bowels. He had been undergoing treatment in the Akron [Iowa] Hospital and upon his return home a few days before his death appeared to have a chance for recovery, but took a sudden turn for the worse. Mr. W.H.H. Fate was born in Licking county, Ohio, July 5, 1840. The primary schools of his native state furnished the education he received until 1857, when his parents removed to Minnesota, he being sixteen years of age at that time. In 1862 he came with his parents to Union county, SD [then Dakota Territory] and located in Richland township, where for 63 years he was a prominent and active citizen in both the civil and religious life of the community. For the past 19 years he was president of the Old Settlers' Association of this county. Mr. Fate was a soldier in the Civil War, having enlisted in Co. B., First Dakota cavalry, Lieut. John R. Woods commanding, the September following his arrival here. He served in this organization during the war, part of the time as corporal, and participated in many of the skirmishes with the Indians. He was with General Sully in the Falling Spring fight and also in the battle of the Bad Lands and during his term of service did scouting and carried orders. After the close of the war he took the homestead north of Richland, on which he has always resided and where his death occurred. He was elected to the office of county commissioner in 1870 and served two terms and in 1877 was elected county superintendent of schools in which capacity he served for five terms. He was also justice of the peace of his township for years. He was one of the four remaining members of the G. A. R. post of this city. Mr. Fate married his first wife, Mary Coykendall, in 1868 and they were the parents of two children, James E., and Nellie S. Fate. She died in 1874. He was married the second time to Miss Laura J. Baker on May 9, 1878, whose death occurred four weeks ago. To this union were born seven children: Addie M., Almina H., Alice E., Thos. L ., Mary, W.H.H. Jr., and Robert. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Wm. Strong in the Richland M.E. church ... [??] ... Richland cemetery. ...''
