Alma Belle Montgomery

| Last Edited | 22 Jan 2011 |
Alma Belle Montgomery was born on 28 March 1903 at Iona, Jewell County, Kansas. She married Raymond George Fate, son of George Lewis Fate and Margaret Bell Louden, in 1924. Alma Belle Montgomery and Raymond George Fate were divorced in 1943. Alma Belle Montgomery died on 20 December 2005 at Mission Viejo, Orange County, California, at age 102. She was buried at Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, Orange County, California.1
Alma Belle Montgomery was listed as wife of Raymond George Fate on the 1930 Census Orange, Orange County, California, on 14 April 1930.2
Obituary of Alma Belle Montgomery appeared on 18 January 2006 at The Orange County Register, Orange County, California, as follows: Long life and indomitable spirit
Never one to dwell on the bad things in life, Alma Fate, an expert seamstress, took joy in gardening, baking and family.
At first blush, one might have thought Alma Fate to be a meek little thing, easily swayed or pushed around. But don't be fooled. She was tiny, all right, and sweet and demurring. But she had a mind of her own and a will of steel when she needed it.
She was 40 years old in 1943 when she sensed something was amiss in her marriage to Raymond Fate. She discreetly followed him one day only to find him going to another woman's home. When they got into a car together, Alma banged angrily on the window. And on her way home, she stopped at a lawyer's office and demanded a divorce, something women rarely did in those days. It cost her $35. Never, she vowed, would she be involved with a man again. And she never was. She was 102 when she died Dec. 20 after suffering a stroke and steadfastly refusing to eat.
Alma was born in Ionia, Kan., the third-youngest of 10 children. She was 14 when her mother died of pneumonia and her father abandoned the family. Alma went to live with an older sister and her husband.
Raymond was Alma's high school sweetheart. When their two sons were young, the family moved to California with a cousin, who set his car on fire to get the insurance money to pay for their trip.
After her divorce, Alma supported her family by working as a garment presser. If she found life as a divorcee difficult in an era when single-parent families were rare, she didn't let on. Alma wasn't one to dwell on the negative. She believed in projecting positive energy – and a lot of it emanated from that determined spirit. For one thing, she refused to worry. What's the point? was her reasoning. Worry changes nothing. She also refrained from complaining. Instead, she looked for the best in everything – and generally found it.
She seemed to ask little from life. She didn't smoke, drink or swear, never possessed a credit card, and refused to drive after one of her sons, at age 2, fell out the back door of the car. But she reaped great rewards from small things.
An expert seamstress, she made many of her clothes and you'd be hard-pressed to distinguish them from the finest commercial fashions. Her garden yielded fresh fruit and vegetables year-round, and she was famous for the persimmon bars made from fruit from her tree. She loved to bake and made some of the tastiest fried chicken.
One small disappointment she readily acknowledged was that her hair went gray, instead of the nice, snowy white she had hoped for. As a result, she dyed it red almost until the day she died, using tea to enhance the tint. And she did carry a torch for Raymond, her one true love. Decades after the divorce, a mention of him could bring tears to her eyes and she brightened at the thought of one day seeing him in heaven.
Alma remained incredibly fit, doing her own gardening and grocery shopping until age 96, when she fell while trying to turn off her floor furnace, which had no thermostat. After the first failed attempt, she sat down for a spell, then stood up to try again. By that time, the room was so hot that she got dizzy and fell. She could not get up and could not reach a phone. By the time neighbors found her and called paramedics, it was 128 degrees in the house and Alma was near death.
But within a couple of days she rallied and could recall everything that had happened. Although she lost the use of her legs, she did not lose her indomitable spirit. On her 100th birthday, Alma's granddaughter and her husband took her to Kansas to visit a little sister she hadn't seen in many years. She had a wonderful time.
It tickled her to turn 100, and she spoke with pride of being the only one in her family to reach the century mark. She couldn't wait to get to heaven to show off how long she'd lived.

Charles Ephraim Overton was born on 25 July 1841 at Bernadotte Twp., Fulton County, Illinois.2 He was the son of Francis Luther Overton and Sarah VanDorn. Charles Ephraim Overton married Laura Elizabeth Heckard on 17 October 1866 at Fulton County, Illinois.3 Charles Ephraim Overton died on 25 March 1909 at age 67.2 He was buried at Baughman Cemetery, Cass Twp., Fulton County, Illinois.4
He C. E. Overton, the subject of the present sketch, is a native of Bernadotte Township, Fulton County, Ill., having been born July 25, 1841. His parents, Francis L. and Sarah (Van Dorn) Overton, settled in Bernadotte Township near Ira Elrod, in the year 1853, and two years later removed to section 7, where they continued to reside until the father's death. Francis L. Overton taught school in his younger days, but after coming to this county devoted his time to farming and took a prominent part in local affairs, at various times holding offices of trust and responsibility. He was especially interested in educational matters.
His wife, who at the time of their marriage was Mrs. Sarah Wilcox, owned the one hundred and sixty acres of land on a part of which her son now resides. Their union was blessed with the following children: Charles E; Luther M., who was married first to Miss Mary Fate, and afterward to Miss Alice Vorhees, and who lives on a part of the old homestead; Harriet M., who married George Fate, and died nineteen years ago; Alice A., who married Mrs. Curtis J. Strode, lives in Lee Township, this county; and Francis L. The latter and his wife Sarah are buried in the Randall graveyard side by side.
Charles Overton was educated in the public schools, and passed one term in the Lewistown Seminary, acquiring thus a sufficient amount of knowledge to begin teaching at the early age of eighteen. However, after two terms of teaching and when he had reached his twentieth year, he enlisted as a soldier in the Union Army on September 10, 1861. He was in Company G, Fiftieth Regiment Illinois infantry, which was organized at Quincy, Ill., and his first service was in Missouri along the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad. He figured in the battle of Shiloh, and narrowly escaped a very serious wound, a ball striking the metal on his leather belt and glancing off. He also took part in the battle and siege of Corinth on the 3d and 4th of October, besides which he was in many smaller engagements and served in Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana. Being transferred to the Fifty-fifth United States Colored Infantry, he received a commission as First Lieutenant of Company C, and later was Captain for a year and a half. Mr. Overton continued in service until January 1, 1866, at which date he was mustered out at Baton Rouge, La., and immediately returned to his home in Bernadotte Township, where he devoted his attention to agricultural pursuits.
In October, 1856, Mr. Overton was united in marriage with Miss Laura E. Heckard, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Kimball) Heckard. After his return from war he bought the eastern half of the old homestead, but subsequently exchanged it for the western half, and to this he has continued to add until his estate at the present writing embraces two hundred and seventy-five acres of highly improved and valuable land. Upon this he has a large frame house and many barns which have been erected by himself. For several years after his marriage he taught school. They are the parents of two children, viz: Frank L., who was born August 10, 1867, and is now Assistant Cashier of the Arkansas Banking Company, of Stuttgart, Arkansas County, Ark; and Cora B., who was born March 20, 1875, and lives at home. The Overtons were of Scotch origin, and the Van Dorns are an old and prosperous German family.
In politics Mr. Overton is a Republican, and like his father was a strong Abolitionist, having assisted several slaves to escape--whole families going through at once. He has served his township as Collector, Assessor and School Director. Besides farming he is interested in stock-raising, and ranks among the most prominent and successful men in the county. He is also largely interested in real estate in Stuttgart, Ark., being a large stockholder in the bank at that place, and being one of the three men who secured the charter for the Stuttgart & Arkansas River Railroad. His son Frank L. was educated in the Fulton County schools, and at the Normal School, Valparaiso, Ind., from which he was graduated with honors on June 2, 1887. He afterward went through a commercial course at the same institute, being graduated March 21, 1889. Miss Cora Overton has up to the present time attended school in her native county and also at Cuba, and her parents are making arrangements to have her most thoroughly educated. Mr. Overton has been of much benefit to the community in which he resides, being at all times interested in public matters and a willing contributor to worthy causes. (Portrait & Biographical Album of Fulton County, 1890, pages 487-488.
