[Martin's] father, Caleb P. Rigby, was a native of Virginia, but removed in early life to Licking county, Ohio. [likely after the death of his father at an early age when his mother sent his brother Washington Augustus Rigby to live with an uncle there.] In September 1846, [Caleb] set his face toward the west and came to Cedar county, Iowa, arriving in Tipton, on election day while the people were voting for the adoption of the new constitution and the admission of the state into the Union. [Martin], as a lad of ten years, drove and cared for a team of horses on this trip from Ohio. [Caleb] located on a farm in Fremont township, near Mechanicsville, where Martin attended district school in a log school house." From 1831 to 1851, Caleb's mother Elizabeth lived with the family and helped with the children.
The Rigby male siblings seem to have inherited a pioneering spirit, from the name of their hometown. Pioneer, Iowa. Elmore is listed in the 1880 and 1890 Census records as living in Columbia and Fulton, Washington, before he moved to California. Jesse left Iowa for the Hood River region of Oregon, and Thomas is listed in successive census records as living in Winfield, Kansas in 1880; then Skagway, Alaska in 1900; followed Mayfield, Idaho in 1920. Both Jesse and Martin served the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Company B under the leadership of their cousin William Titus Rigby. Jesse later became a minister.

Colvin, Sand Springs; a step-son, M.E. Fate, 120 N. Lewis pl; a brother, C.L. Scranton, Bokoshe; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
